CHANTRY FLATS TO CAMP STURTEVANT 8mi round trip, 1400' elevation gain (gradual uphill going in) VERY SLOW paced hike through the beautiful Big Santa Anita Canyon. Lots of big-cone spruce, CA Laurels, canyon live oak, maple & alder trees. We will pass some old cabins and waterfalls on the way. We will end up at Camp Sturtevant, a very beautiful camp- with old cabins, a lodge, and mess hall (built in 1897). We will be following the stream, but there probably won't be much water this time of year. Very scenic! It's a 4-6 hour hike round trip, depending on how fast the group is. Add another hour for a leisurely lunch break at the camp. The trail is fairly smooth- not too rocky. It's not too difficult, but it IS UPHILL on the way in. Please do not go if you have someplace you have to be by a certain time later that day/night- we do not want to have to rush back. Bring 2 quarts water, lunch, hiking boots, raincoat, and warm clothes. Rain does NOT cancel!!!! DIRECTIONS TO CHANTRY FLATS (TRAILHEAD): From the SF valley: From the beach areas: Note: allow 20-30 minutes for driving on Santa Anita Canyon Road (it's a windy mountain road). You WILL need an Adventure Pass (see home page for details on that). |

Note: this is Thanksgiving weekend 9 miles rt 1000 ft. altitude gain (very gradual uphill going in), VERY VERY SLOW paced hike along the East Fork of the San Gabriel River and then into Alison Gulch. Like the Bridge to Nowhere, this hike starts at the East Fork Ranger Station (above Azusa), continues along the river and past Swan Rock. Instead of going further north to the bridge, we will hang a right and go east soon after Swan Rock- this is Alison Gulch. We will be along a stream in Alison Gulch, although there won't be near as much water in there as there is on the East Fork. Eventually we will come to an 80' waterfall and won't be able to go any further. It's more shady than going to the Bridge. Very few people go up Alison Gulch, so it's very wild and scenic. Total hike time (with breaks) is roughly 7-8 hours. If you have to be somewhere after the hike, please do not come! If you don't want to go at a VERY SLOWPOKE pace, please don't come! You can see pictures of this hike in the "photos" section of this meetup site. Bring 2 quarts water, lunch, and WARM CLOTHES. You will need an Adventure Pass if you are driving to the trail head. We may go out to eat afterward. Directions to the rideshare in Azusa: from the westside: 105 or 10 east, 605 north, 210 east, exit at Azusa Av. Go north (left) toward the mountains. Turn left into the CVS parking lot on the northwest corner of Azusa Av. and Foothill Bl. Park as far west in the parking lot as you can. I'll put my pack on top of my car so you can find me. from the valley: 118 east, 210 east, then follow directions above. |

We will MEET AT the Sylmar Rideshare Point at 7:30am (Sorry it's so early- but we will need the daylight since it's a long hike). Take the 405 north to the 5 north, go right at the Roxford Exit, then another right immediately onto Encinitas St. Park on the street by the Denny's and McDonalds. From the rideshare point we can carpool to the trailhead since the parking there is limited. The trailhead is at St. Thomas Aquanis College in Santa Paula (on the way to Ohai). I have maps with directions from the rideshare to the trailhead that I will give out. You will not need a parking pass. DETAILS: Most of the hikes we do will be in the San Gabriel Mountains, but this one is in the Los Padres National Forest. It's a little farther drive than most of the hikes we do but I think it's worth the drive (about 1.5 hours from LA to the trailhead). This is a challenging hike- YOU WILL NEED A LOT OF ENERGY and it will be a long day at a slowpoke pace! It is ROUGHLY 7 miles with very little elevation gain. Somewhere around 9 HOURS- longer if we explore a little side canyon (WE MAY DO THE LAST HOUR OR SO OF THE HIKE IN THE DARK). LOTS of rock hopping and some stream crossings (YOU MAY GET YOUR FEET WET!). There's a cool waterfall/swimming hole, although it will probably be too cold to swim this time of year (you never know, though- if you want to bring a bathing suit!). Cool rock formations called the 'punchbowls' You can see lots of PICTURES of this hike in the Santa Paula Canyon albums on this site. ****BRING: food for lunch & dinner, at least 2 qts. water, shoes or hiking boots that can get wet, bathing suit (optional), extra pants (in case you get wet), warm clothes just in case, sunscreen, and flashlight or headlamp. |

10 mile (roundtrip), 1000 ft. gain hike from the East Fork Ranger Station to the Bridge to Nowhere. IF the group is up for it we will go about a mile past the bridge into the East Fork Narrows. Slowpoke paced hike along the wild and beautiful East Fork of the San Gabriel River through the Sheep Mountain Wilderness area. Some boulder hopping, rock scrambling, and 30+ stream crossings. The hike will take 7- 9 hours, depending on how far we go (including a few short breaks and a long lunch break). It takes about 30 minutes to drive to the trailhead from the rideshare point we are meeting at in Azusa (directions below). Note: You MAY get WET! This is a challenging hike mainly because it is long- you will need energy! If you think you might want to go faster than the leader and stray from the group, please don't sign up for this hike. For social and safety reasons I would like the group to stay together. Slowpokes only! The last hour or so of the hike MAY be in the DARK!!! (the beginning and end of the hike is a fairly easy trail, though). We will probably make it out before dark, but IF YOU DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE HIKING IN THE DARK PLEASE DON'T SIGN UP FOR THIS HIKE! If you have someplace you need to be at a certain time or something to do after the hike that requires energy- please do not sign up for this hike. BRING: At least 2 quarts water, lunch, warm clothes!!, hiking shoes or boots that can get wet, flashlight or headlamp, raincoat? We may go out to eat after the hike. RAIN DOES NOT CANCEL! (That's what raincoats are for). You will need an ADVENTURE PASS if you plan on driving to the trailhead from the rideshare point. They can be purchased from Sport Chalet or REI or any ranger station. There is a booth to buy them at in Azusa, but you can't always depend on it being open. from the westside: 105 or 10 east, 605 north, 210 east, exit at Azusa Av. Go north (left) toward the mountains. At Foothill Bl. Turn left into the CVS parking lot. Park as close to Azusa Av. as possible. We may leave some cars there or we may go from there to the ranger station and park. Note that the market that used to be on 9th and Azusa Av. is now closed (will reopen as a Target). from the valley: 118 east, 210 east, then follow directions above. |

Due to the fires, this hike will be the only one that isn't HARDCORE, isn't along a RIVER and isn't in a CANYON!!!!! It will still be FUN, though!! This is a beautiful area!! We will go at the usual SLOWPOKE pace! This is an ALL DAY event (maybe 8 hours??? I'm not sure since I haven't done this one in a long time). The majority of the hike will be ON the beach, part of it up on the bluffs. We will start at the north end of Crystal Cove State Park, on the beach. We will hike to the south end of Crystal Cove, pass Emerald Bay, and go to Crescent Bay in Laguna Beach. About 8.5 miles round trip. There are cool tide pools to see if the tide is low enough (I've seen sea urchins, starfish, and other interesting critters there). There are old historic bungalow cottages on the beach and up on the bluffs that have been restored. There is also a museum and refreshment stands. A local Newport Beach resident who knows the area will be joining us and can show us points of interest. We will be VERY slow, stopping to see the cottages and tide pools, swim, picnic, and relax. BRING: Lunch, tennis shoes or water shoes/booties, bathing suit, warm clothes just-in-case, sunscreen/hat, money for refreshment stands. No parking pass required. DIRECTIONS FROM BEACHES/ LA: |

Anne is on Holiday and was gracious enough to allow me to offer this camping trip to her meet up This trip is the sequel to my friend Mike's wonderful Rock Creek lake car camp that I went to last year. I was able to book the same group campsite for 3 nights starting July 24 a Friday - Monday July 27th. It is so beautiful up there!!! I am sure we can find plenty to do with all the hikes, MTB fishing, hot springing, and kayaking. Hint hint bring kayaks!! Just laying around the camp is also pleasure. The group site I rented is completely secluded and right on the lake . We have our own bear boxes and bathrooms. Free water is also available. Pay showers are a short drive 1-2 miles away. Mammoth, my fav place in the world is close as well. The cost per person will be 13.00 for all 3 nights/4 days. This includes the paypal fee. I need it immediately if you want to go. pay "romeblu151@aol I have the site till Monday afternoon but if you can only stay till Sunday that's ok to but the price is the same. Carpooling is strongly encouraged and I am asking each car to contribute at least 1 bundle of wood. Please bring 2 bundles if more than 2 people are in your car. I like fire. I am shooting for 10 cars or less. So 2 in each car would do it. We will discuss carpools when the trip is full. A Saturday night potluck is scheduled so lets be done cooking and start munching by 7:00 pm!!! Last time the chefs were creating masterpieces till 10 pm and we were too full from earlier goodies to enjoy. Beside we need daylight to cook. I hope everyone contributes. The camp is at high altitude 9K+ so expect heavy breathing and cold temps w nights in the 30s and days in the high 70-80s. Sunshine is expected though! The Rock Creek Monster may make and appearance... oooooohhhhhh Guitars, games, music, and great conversationalists welcome. Dogs are ok to as long as are friendly and I get to play with them! Sorry no kids this time. Driving directions~Do ignore the meet up address listed. It does not exist. From Los Angeles: This writeup is very complete so please read it twice. 5 spots left. Go ahead and sign up and pay today as time is short. *There are no refunds and this trip is cross posted on outdoorclub.org Cost: $13.00 |

No rating yet THIS IS AN OVERNIGHT BACKPACK through the beautiful Sheep Mountain Wilderness area. We will meet in Azusa at 8am (directions below), then drive up San Gabriel Canyon Road to the East Fork Ranger Station (14 miles, about 30 minutes). From there we will hike to the Bridge to Nowhere (5 miles) then into the East Fork Narrows (about a half a mile farther). We will hike at an EXTREMELY SLOWPOKE pace along the wild and beautiful East Fork of the San Gabriel River. Some boulder hopping, rock scrambling, and 30+ stream crossings. With lots of breaks it will take about 4 hours to hike to the place we will set up camp. After we set up camp we will go a little further up the canyon and explore along the Iron Fork. Sunday we can do more exploring in the area before we head back if everyone is up for it, or we can just hang out at camp. WE WILL NOT START HIKING BACK TO THE RANGER STATION UNTIL ABOUT 3PM ON SUNDAY. The reason for this is that I would like to spend the day in the wilderness, not the city. We can explore, relax, go swimming, it will be a FUN ADVENTURE!!! Note: You MAY get WET! This is a challenging hike mainly because it is rocky and we will have heavy packs on- you will need energy! If you think you might want to go faster than the leader and stray from the group, please don't sign up for this hike. For social and safety reasons I would like the group to stay together. SLOWPOKES ONLY!! BRING: At least 2 quarts water (I will have a water purifier if you need to refill), tons of food, warm clothes (it can get cold at night sometimes), hiking shoes or boots that can get wet, flashlight or headlamp, raincoat?, bathing suit (optional), tent, sleeping bag, Adventure Pass, book to read (optional) and 10 essentials are recommended but not required. No camp fires are allowed. Pass Foothill Bl., pass the downtown area, pass the Ranger Station on the right, pass a gated community on the left, and turn right on Old San Gabriel Canyon Rd. (just before some stables). from the valley: 118 east, 210 east, then follow directions above. |

We will be following the river, but there probably won't be too much water this time of year. Very scenic! On part of the way back we will EXPLORE OFF TRAIL along the river. I haven't done this before (so this is an "EXPLORATORY" It's about a 5 hour (maybe 6 going off-trail), fairly easy hike. Add 1-2 hours for a leisurely lunch break, and add a little time to go in the water (if there's enough of it this time of year?!). Please do not go if you have someplace you have to be by a certain time later that day/night! Bring 2 quarts water, lunch, hiking boots, bathing suit (optional) and warm clothes (or no clothes!) just-in-case. You will need an Adventure Pass (see home page for more about this). This is a TRASH PICKUP/PICNIC/HIKE!! This is a great opportunity to help keep our environment GREEN! The forest service is very understaffed right now and they will really appreciate it! They said picking up trash along the river will also help save an endangered fish (I can't remember the name of the fish). We will be along the beautiful San Gabriel River all day!! I did this with the Sierra Club before and it was REALLY FUN!!!! (You never know what you will find picking up trash- we found part of a dead bear!) Picking up trash is a GREAT WORKOUT! Goal: at least 150 large bags of trash!!!!!! PLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS TO HELP OUT!!!! NEW INFO AS OF 6/9/09: I just found out that another group, CA Trail Users Coalition, is doing a trash pickup ("Super Sweep") the same day and same location. It sounds like there's going to be over 100 people involved. It's their 35th annual trash pickup. We will be joining them for the trash pickup portion of the day. They will provide lunch if you don't want to bring your own lunch. Here is a ROUGH itinerary: 9am Meet at rideshare (directions below) We may go out to eat afterward. The area is along the river and we will be picking up trash next to and IN the river- so bring shoes that can get wet. It's very rocky so tennis shoes or hiking boots are preferable to anything open toed. The area where we will be picking up trash is a popular picnic spot for people who like to be litterbugs so there is usually tons of trash there. There won't be much trash where we hike. There will be some boulder hopping, rock scrambling, and many stream crossings. Not much elevation gain, and the number of miles will depend on how much energy everyone has to hike after picking up trash. We will probably end up hiking about 5 miles round trip (not including the trash pick-up which will be only a mile or so). As usual, we will hike at an EXTREMELY SLOWPOKE pace! BRING: Shoes/hiking boots that can get wet, warm clothes (just-in-case), at least 2 quarts of water, RAIN DOES NOT CANCEL ********IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP COORDINATE THIS EVENT PLEASE LET ME KNOW A.S.A.P.!!!!!! We need help with printing or distributing fliers (ie. at REIs or in your community) to publicize the event, getting prizes donated (maybe from REI?? so we can award the person who picked up the most trash, biggest piece of trash, most unusual piece of trash, etc.) or getting food donated for the picnic. RIDESHARE: From the westside: 105 or 10 east, 605 north, 210 east, exit Azusa Av. (from the S.F. valley: 118 east, 210 east, pass the 605, exit Azusa Av). Go left (north) on Azusa Av. toward the mountains. We used to meet at the RANCH MARKET in Azusa which is now CLOSED. The El Encanto Restaurant is now closed as well, but the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy bought it and allows us to park there. From Azusa Av (Highway 39) and the 210, keep going north toward the mountains. Pass Foothill Bl. and when you are near the mountains you will pass the Forest Service building on your right. Pass a gated housing community on your left. You will make a right just before the entrance to some stables. If I can find out more details I will let you know- this is all the info I have right now. |

No rating yet HIKE: If you think you might want to go faster than the leader and stray from the group, please don't sign up for this hike. For social and safety reasons I would like the group to stay together. Slowpokes only! WE WILL BE GOING BACK A DIFFERENT WAY THAN USUAL!!! Instead of staying high at the level of the bridge, we will go back staying at the river level. This is more challenging, and involves getting a little wet at a couple spots, maybe even a short swim (going across a pool about 20 feet long 10 feet or less deep). To keep your things dry you will need dry bags or lots of plastic bags to put your valuables in. This can only be done if the water level is fairly low (due to how fast the water will flow where there's a narrow spot in the river just below the bridge)- if it's too high for safety we won't do it. I've done it twice now and it's REALLY FUN! Also, going this way we will pass Horseshoe Mine. This way makes the hike a little longer. BRING: At least 2 quarts water, lunch, warm clothes!!, hiking shoes or boots that can get wet, flashlight or headlamp, drybags or plastic bags to keep belongings dry. We may go out to eat after the hike. You will need an ADVENTURE PASS if you plan on driving to the trailhead from the rideshare point.
