CHANTRY FLATS TO CAMP STURTEVANT
8mi rt, 1400' elevation gain (very gradual uphill going in) VERY SLOW paced hike through the beautiful Big Santa Anita Canyon. Lots of shade from big-cone spruce, CA Laurels, canyon live oak, maple & alder trees. We will pass some old cabins and waterfalls on the way. We will end up at Camp Sturtevant, a very beautiful camp- with old cabins, a lodge, and mess hall (built in 1897). We will be following the river, but there probably won't be too much water this time of year. Very scenic!
On part of the way back we will EXPLORE OFF TRAIL along the river. I haven't done this before (so this is an "EXPLORATORY" hike!) although the caretaker of Camp Sturtevant suggested it and said it's nice. It will add a little ADVENTURE to the hike!
It's about a 5 hour (maybe 6 going off-trail), fairly easy hike. Add 1-2 hours for a leisurely lunch break, and add a little time to go in the water (if there's enough of it this time of year?!). Please do not go if you have someplace you have to be by a certain time later that day/night!
Bring 2 quarts water, lunch, hiking boots, bathing suit (optional) and warm clothes (or no clothes!) just-in-case. You will need an Adventure Pass (see home page for more about this).
THIS IS NATIONAL NUDE HIKER WEEK (FOR REAL- I'M NOT MAKING THIS UP!!!) SO CLOTHES ARE OPTIONAL?!?!
