It's all about enjoying the wilderness! Hiking in the local canyons- mostly in the San Gabriel Mountains. All hikes will be along a stream in a canyon and at a very slow pace with lots of breaks. All hikes will be between 5-12 hours long, usually around 9 hours. The difficulty level is intermediate, but beginners are welcome if they are in good shape and have an attitude of adventure! Safety always comes first, of course.

It's recommended (but not required) that you bring the TEN ESSENTIALS on all hikes.
10 ESSENTIALS:
To find your way:
1. Flashlight
2. Map of the area
3. Compass
For your protection:
4. Sunglasses
5. Extra food and water
6. Extra clothing
For emergencies:
7. Waterproof matches
8. Candle or fire starter
9. Pocketknife
10.First-aid kit

For hikes where ADVENTURE PASSES are needed for parking:
You can buy them at any Ranger Station, Sport Chalet, REI, maybe some other sporting goods stores, and sometimes gas stations in the foothills of the mountains. Day pass=$5, Annual pass $30, buy one get second annual pass (called a "secondary pass") for $5.

What members are saying

Anne hikes at a pace that you can actually enjoy the beauty of the surroundings and take a couple pics along the way without being left behind in a cloud of dust.

Fitness hiking is good and great, but a slow poke pace gives all sorts of different opportunities for newcomers to hiking to casual or serious shutterbugs to naturists to birdwatchers, etc., etc.

“I love hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains. But when I'm boulder-hopping through a canyon it slows down my pace a lot. I'd love to make more friends who enjoy a tough canyon hike but at a moderate pace.”
