====================

UPDATE 05/08: I have closed this hike to new RSVPs since it is full and I will not have access to a computer between now and the hike. If a space does open up and you would like to attend please call me at (978) 808-1932.

====================

UPDATE 05/06: The weather forecast for Saturday calls for cloudy skies with temperatures in the low 60s. We will need to be prepared for winter conditions (see gear requirements listed below) as well as making several river crossings, which depending on the weather, may be challenging. While we will not take any unnecessary risks you should be prepared to get a little bit wet - bring an extra set of clothes and several extra pairs of socks to change into if you get wet and an extra pair of sneakers that you can change into to cross the river(s).

====================

This peak eluded me on Thanksgiving day last year and now I am ready to make it mine. Isolation (4,003 feet - #47 on AMC 4K List) is the highest peak of the Montalban Ridge, a subsidiary of the Presidentials, and offers some of the finest views in the White Mountains.

This moderate pace hike (2.0 - 2.5 mph) is considered a Level 5 - Advanced Hike because of the distance covered and the conditions described below. Click here for more information about our hike ratings - http://hiking.meetup....

We will meet at 8:00 AM at the Rocky Branch Trailhead which is located in a paved parking lot on the west side of NH 16 about 5.5 miles north of Jackson and just north of the bridge over the Ellis River. After going over our plans and checking our gear we will begin our hike at 8:30 AM.

We will follow Rocky Branch Trail, Isolation Trail and Davis Path to and from the peak of Isolation. This roundtrip hike will cover about 14.5 miles and climb a combined total of about 3,900 feet.

  • According to the AMC it should take an average hiker about 10.5 hours to complete this hike so we may end up finishing in the dark. YOU MUST HAVE A HEADLAMP (OR FLASHLIGHT) WITH SPARE BATTERIES TO PARTICIPATE.
  • Winter conditions are still present at the higher elevations and we may encounter snow and ice. YOU MUST DRESS FOR WINTER CONDITIONS AND YOU MUST HAVE SNOWSHOES AND SOME FORM OF TRACTION DEVICE (e.g. Stabilicers or Crampons) TO PARTICIPATE.
  • There are several river crossings that may be challenging because of increased volume from melting snow. YOU MUST HAVE WATERPROOF BOOTS TO PARTICIPATE.

While http://files.meetup.c... is intended for multiple day trips, it provides useful information to prepare for hiking in winter conditions.

In an effort to coordinate ride-sharing please indicate in your RSVP if you are able to give a ride or if you are looking to get one.

All RSVPs must be updated 48 hours before this event. A MAYBE will be changed to a NO at that time so that others have the opportunity to participate. Changes or cancellations will be posted on the calendar by 6:00 PM the night before the event and those members who responded YES or MAYBE will also be notified via email.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

    •  Trails show certainly signs of winter clean needs to be in order but overall this hike is absolutely spectacular with its location. This set of trails, second time doing this, found to be the most ?in the woods" feel captured by the Whites. Great company, great trip, fun river crossings - Would welcome this trip in its entirety again!
    •  Although it was disappointing--again-- not making it to the summit. I know it was the right decision to turn back. Thanks Michael for organizing this trip and getting me there.
    • Pete (+1 guest)
       Ouch! Lei and I split from the group and kept going, we made it to the summit, but what a trip, multiple river crossings, bushwhacking, spruce traps (damn you Spruce for not being there to find them!), trails that weren't marked and lots of darkness! We made the last 2 river crossings in the dark and got down at 12:15 AM. For those that went, you are most likely glad you turned back when you did, the river crossing where you turned around wasn't the last one!
    •  What a great day. Although we didn't come close to the goal the great company, the weather and the workout certainly made up for it.
    •  Good trip. If we were guaranteed to make the summit, then hiking wouldn't be so exciting.
    •  Curses, foiled again. One day I will be able to say that Rocky Branch Trail to Isolation is mine, but not this day. I am glad that Pete and Lei made it up and back, and thanks for the photshoping of us all at the summit. The group did great - hopefully Leo and Monica have dried out. Nice to see some new faces out there and I hope to see you guys again.
