Details

Where
Eno River State Park, Fews Ford Access (in northern Durham county)

We will hike the Buckquarter Creek Trail, the Ridge Trail and the Shakori Trail. A good part of the trail is along the river and there are some nice bluffs and scenic outlooks. The total distance we will walk is a bit less than 4 miles and we?ll hike at a moderate pace. You have to be in good shape for this hike. There are lots of roots and rocks to trip over along the Eno, you'll have to hop from rock to rock to cross Buckquarter creek and then there is a nice long uphill climb. Hiking boots are highly recommended. Also bring water.

Directions
From Durham or Raleigh take I85 south and get off at exit 173, Cole Mill Road. Make a right at the end of the exit ramp and follow Cole Mill Road straight to its very end at the park. Drive a short way into the park and a sign will direct you to make a right turn into the parking area for the Piper Cox House and the Buckquarter Creek Trail. We will meet at that parking lot. If you drive all the way into the park, you will dead end in a parking lot that has a bathroom on the right. On the way up Cole Mill Road, you'll pass the Cole Mill access to the park. DON'T get off there.

From Chapel Hill, take 15-501 into Durham and get off on Hillsboro Road heading west. In about a quarter mile, make a right into Cole Mill Road (you go under I85) and then follow above directions.

If you want to call me on the morning of the hike, my cell phone number is 919-475-1813. If I call off the hike because of bad weather, I?ll notify you two hours before the scheduled hike time.

The trails were in good shape by the time we hiked. Crossing Buckquarter Creek by hopping across rocks was a little tricky, but no one fell in. There are some nice picnic spots on the river on Buckquarter Creek Trail.

I really want to go on this hike b/c I've heard the NW trails are more challenging than the Eastern Trails (esp. Shakori Trail which I heard involves a small amount of climbing) But I know it's not safe in mud--like after yesterday's tornado/severe storms! Please RESCHEDULE!! or REPEAT on a clear day? Today's a day for pavement hikes **sigh**
