About this Meetup

Welcome to the Raleigh Recreational Hikers! We would be delighted to have you join us for some vigorous exercise in the company of wonderful, like-minded people in the great outdoors. We are a group of enthusiastic amateurs. We get together primarily to hike but we also have some wonderful social events and new members, who choose to participate, quickly become friends.

We hike primarily in the state and local parks around Raleigh and I guess Umstead State Park is a kind of headquarters for us. But we've been all over the state of North Carolina and even have an ongoing series of "Road Trips" with the stated goal of hiking in every one of the state parks. We'll see!

We've enjoyed wine tastings, art walks, dinners, movies and concerts as a group and we're always on the look-out for good social events. Even our most vigorous hikes are followed with lunch and laughter. If I do say so myself, we're a pretty awesome group!

We are a lot of things but there are a few things we are not: We are not experts. We are not professional guides. We are not medical professionals. In the spirit of friendship and camaraderie we try to keep everyone safe and have, thus far, succeeded, but we do not offer a sanitized experience like Disney or even Outward Bound. Hiking is dangerous. People get hurt -- even die while hiking ALL THE TIME. We leave it to our individual members to choose appropriate activities for themselves because only they know their own capabilities. Please choose carefully. We mean it: Choose carefully. Okay?

Again, we're not experts but there are few commonsense things that we think you should do at the outset. Get proper gear. Boots are essential. Don't hike in flip flops, for example!! Insect repellent, a cell phone, water, water, water. Something to carry your water, like a pack. Wear a hat.

We can't and don't offer activities that are appropriate for all fitness levels. Most of our hikes are moderate but we usually move along at a pretty good pace. If you're not in great shape (yet!) stick with the walks and strolls. Hiking REQUIRES that you honestly evaluate your own fitness level and choose appropriate activities. Once we're on the trail you must keep up!

Don't mistake our enthusiasm for expertise. Don't think of us as anything more than a group of friends because, indeed, we are nothing more than that. If you will join with us it is our sincere hope that we will be nothing less!

Bill Walsh
