HIKE DESCRIPTION:
It's a continuous uphill hike (until the downhill portion, of course). A portion of the trail is single file only and you'll be walking on some loose rocks/gravel/sand. If you have significant knee problems, this might not be a good hike for you. There's no shade on this hike so it's advisable to bring a hat and sunscreen.
This hike is open to all members without restriction. This does not mean it is an easy hike: it means that no special permissions are required from the event organizer (Maura) in order to join. This is a moderate hike. Please read the description to be sure that it is the right level for you.
Please be aware that we expect you to take responsibility for your safety while we are out on the trails. This means arriving prepared, remaining aware and participating with the other really wonderful folks who are part of the group on hike day. We understand that your "Yes" RSVP to this event means you accept this.
If the hike is full, please RSVP "No" and add a comment asking to be added to the wait list. Our folks are really, really good about keeping their RSVP status current and the wait list works REALLY well. Please remember that it is NOT OKAY to come to this hike unless you have a "Yes" RSVP for yourself and any guests you'd like to bring.
Here is a link to more great Bay Area Hiker info about the hike. We are really looking forward to seeing YOU there.
CARPOOLS:
Fewer cars at the trailhead is always happiness. Meetup does not organize carpools; however we are a friendly group with lots of folks who are interested in sharing rides. If you'd like to offer a ride, please leave a comment in your RSVP letting folks know where you're coming from and how many spaces there are. If you'd like to ride as a passenger, it is YOUR JOB to check the website RSVP list and contact any of the nice people offering a ride to see if they still have a space for you. If you're a passenger and your plans change, please be sure to let the driver know.
DIRECTIONS:
From northbound US 101 in San Francisco County, cross the Golden Gate Bridge and exit at Alexander (the first exit past the view point turnoff). After about 0.3 mile, turn left onto Bunker Road. There is a one-way tunnel which cuts under 101, and you may need to wait up to 5 minutes for your turn to travel through it (this is a great opportunity to put on sunscreen). From the other side of the tunnel, drive about 3 miles on Bunker Drive to the trailhead at the end of the road.
From southbound US 101 in Marin County, exit Sausalito (the last exit before the bridge). Drive uphill on Conzelman Road, then turn right onto McCullough Road. Descend on McCullough to a junction with Bunker Road, and turn left. Drive west on Bunker to the trailhead at the end of the road.
TRAILHEAD DETAILS:
Plenty of parking in lots and on the side of the road. No entrance or parking fees. Wheelchair-accessible restrooms at edge of parking lot. There are handicapped-designated parking spots, but the trails are not wheelchair accessible. No maps available at trailhead. If you want to pick up a map before you start hiking, stop at the Visitor Center on the way to the trailhead: from the Headlands side of the tunnel on Bunker Drive, drive about 2 miles and bear left onto Field (just before you get to the lagoon). Make the first right into the Visitor Center parking lot. Muni bus line #76 services this trailhead via Bunker Road (Sundays and major holidays only): visit the Transit Info website for details.
MEETING SPOT: The very last parking lot at the end of Mitchell road, near the restrooms (see the uploaded map in the Files section).
POST-HIKE REFRESHMENT LOCATION:
Although it's not an official part of the hike, a big friendly group of us often mange to make our way to a fine local establishment for post-hike refreshments and cheer. All recommendations are considered; however CHEAP, plentiful food is goodness. There is no pre-planning involved so spots that can roll with a big group arriving are usually a good fit. We always like to make sure everyone can have something to eat, so variety is also nice.
