HIKE STATS:
Start Time: 10am
Distance: 5.4 mi loop
Estimated Hike Time: 2-3 hrs
Elevation change: 800 feet
Event Type: Open
Difficulty: Moderate
Event Organizer: Maura

Now that the weather is so perfect, we're heading back to the East Bay for more great hikes in the East Bay. Come join us for a Moderate hike at lovely Anthony Chabot Park.

Remember that the address in the info/map link above is approximate. [Google maps does a better job.] If you use a mapping program, please be sure to combine it with the written directions and road signs. This is where your fellow car-poolers come in really handy!!

* As always, be sure to bring WATER, snacks and an extra layer (like a windbreaker)
* The route for this hike HAS been posted to the Files section. Big points for printing maps for you and some of your new friends.
* No pets, please

This hike is open to all members without restriction. This does not mean it is an easy hike: it means that no special permissions are required from the event organizer (Maura) in order to join. This is a moderate hike. Please read the description to be sure that it is the right level for you.

Please be aware that we expect you to take responsibility for your safety while we are out on the trails. This means arriving prepared, remaining aware and participating with the other really wonderful folks who are part of the group on hike day. We understand that your "Yes" RSVP to this event means you accept this.

If the hike is full, please RSVP "No" and add a comment asking to be added to the wait list. Our folks are really, really good about keeping their RSVP status current and the wait list works REALLY well. Please remember that it is NOT OKAY to come to this hike unless you have a "Yes" RSVP for yourself and any guests you'd like to bring.

Here is a link to more great Bay Area Hiker info about the hike. We are really looking forward to seeing YOU there.

CARPOOLS:
Fewer cars at the trailhead is always happiness. Meetup does not organize carpools; however we are a friendly group with lots of folks who are interested in sharing rides. If you'd like to offer a ride, please leave a comment in your RSVP letting folks know where you're coming from and how many spaces there are. If you'd like to ride as a passenger, it is YOUR JOB to check the website RSVP list and contact any of the nice people offering a ride to see if they still have a space for you. If you're a passenger and your plans change, please be sure to let the driver know.

DIRECTIONS:
* From CA 24 in Alameda County, exit south CA 13 (exit 5). Drive about 4 miles south and exit Redwood (exit 1c). Turn left onto Redwood and drive uphill about 0.5 mile, to the junction with Skyline Boulevard. Stay in the left lane, and continue straight on Redwood about 4.3 miles, to the trailhead on the right side of the road.
* From westbound Interstate 580 in Alameda County, exit Redwood Road (exit 36a). Turn left on Castro Valley Blvd., then right on Redwood Road. Drive north about 6 miles to the trailhead on the left side of the road.

DIRECTIONS NOTE: From the Anthony Chabot Park Map (Map), the Bort Meadow trailhead is about 2 miles south of the intersection of Redwood Road and Pinehurst Road.

TRAILHEAD DETAILS:
Large dirt parking lot. No entrance or parking fees. Maps available at the information signboard located just off the parking lot. Pit toilets and drinking water located at the edge of Bort Meadow. There is no designated handicapped parking, and trails are not well-suited to wheelchairs. There is no direct public transportation to this trailhead, but AC Transit will bring you within walking distance of the park.

POST-HIKE REFRESHMENT LOCATION:
Although it's not an official part of the hike, a big friendly group of us often mange to make our way to a fine local establishment for post-hike refreshments and cheer. All recommendations are considered; however CHEAP, plentiful food is goodness. There is no pre-planning involved so spots that can roll with a big group arriving are usually a good fit. We always like to make sure everyone can have something to eat, so variety is also nice.

** Today's Winner **

We're going back to Montclair Village -- it should take us roughly 10-15 minutes to get there from the Bort MeadowTrailhead in Anthony Chabot.

My first meetup, what a fun hike! I wish I could have taken a picture of folks at the crossroads with their maps out, pointing in completely different directions. The company was great.

Great hike ... with the extra credit :-) I think we did about 7.7 miles. As always, with good company and good views, time flies - and you only wish you had a bit more time to enjoy the surrounding greenery! See you all on the next hike!

We were lost. Redwood X pinehurst did not come up on the GPS. So we spent some time looking for Boat Meadows :( We reached there late and hiked on our own on Redtail trail. Very nice park. Hopefully next time we will catch up with you people :)

Excellent choice on the restaurant. I'm definitely having the Mexican meatball soup again. Awesome!

    "Wonderful hike "

  • Jon
"It's only 5.4mi if you don't do the optional routes.. but add them in and it's more like 9mi. We did both extras, and it was very nice."

  • Justin
"I liked this park, it had some nice trails. I liked the fact that I could cross it in 20 minutes. I also had some nice wild life, like wild turkey, hawks, over ripe banana slugs, and tiny rabbits and snakes. The trails need some taming though. "

"So.. we got lost a few times on the trail but I sure did enjoy the company! It's a neat hike with wonderful views but of course we were talking to each other quite a bit that sometimes we missed the views (including trailheads). :D Loved hanging out with the rest of the peeps during lunch. "
