Placeholder for the first Practice Hike of our First Ever Skyline-to-the-Sea (S2S) series, which will be held in full on Memorial Day Weekend. We'll do three practice hikes - one for each leg of the series. There's more information in the active Message Board thread. More details to follow.

The first leg is Saratoga Gap: Castle Rock to Waterman Gap. The full practice leg is 9.6 miles with 1300 ft of elevation. *Note: The full hike does not end at the starting trailhead.* Additionally, this is a difficult hike; however we'd be delighted to have YOU join us as a driver (see below) if the full hike is not for you this year.

For all of the S2S hikes (both practice and actual) we'll have both hikers and drivers. The hikers will be doing the full leg of the hike. The drivers will also be hiking, but their main responsibility will be to drop folks off at the "start" trailhead, drive to the "finish" trailhead, and do an out-and-back hike from the finish point. The turnaround point for the "driver hikers" will be the point that they meet the "hiker hikers". I gotta think of some better names for folks, but there it is for right now.

If you've heard me talk about this, you know it's gonna be great. We're so excited to have you join us, either as a hiker, as a driver, or as someone who's going to join us for lunch and celebrations.

Please be sure to include whether you will be a *hiker hiker* or a *driver hiker* in your RSVP. More details to follow. Looking forward to seeing YOU out on the trail soon.

I am wondering how much encouragement it will take to encourage our beloved "driver hikers" to set up finish line motivation for us!

I am driving from SF and invite carpoolers. Meet up in SF to be determined. I can also stop along 280 for peninsula dwellers.

For those who specified a preference, the hiker-hiker to driver-hiker ratio seems to be about 8 or 9:1. It might make sense for some hiker-hikers to meet at the Waterman Gap parking. They could leave some cars there and shuttle back to the hiker-hiker trailhead. Does anyone wish to carpool from the Fremont area?

how are we going to make sure that there are enough drivers?

Who attended?

    •  It was very confusing as to where to meet for the starting point. Several people, including my car, got lost and drove at least another hour trying to find the place. I would suggest that the leader provide an exact map link (whether it's Google or Yahoo, etc.) on the event info page, so we can all look at the same map and destination (like what was done in the files section with the maps marked up). Otherwise, the hike itself, was very nice. I am very appreciative toward the driver hikers!

Nice way to start the day. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteer driver/hikers.

Thank you Maura and all your support to help me finishing S2S practice hike... I do not have this kind of feeling for a long time.
    •  great hike! I appreciate the extra work put into organizing the subgroups for different distances and speeds. that support for diverse hiking styles is pretty unique. the drivers (Ava in my case) deserve commendation for taking lots of people in an otherwise pointless 16-mile roundtrip.
