You'll see why I call it Fort Red Dog once we reach the destination, which stands about 12 miles NW of the Rt 66 Casino. For now, you should know this: the area has been leased for quarrying. Once the digging begins, this place will never be the same. Enjoy it while you can.

Difficulty: Moderate. 5 miles min/8 miles max. Frequent photo breaks. No major elevation gain/loss, but it does involve some climbing - nothing technical - just extensive wandering in and out of deep arroyos to explore whatever cliffs or crevices that happen to catch our eye. In the event of rain, we'll stick to higher ground.

Driving: about 80 miles r/t. Some very bumpy roads, but passenger cars w/ average clearance should be ok. (No lowriders or minicoops). 4WD would be helpful in case of rain.

-Pack plenty of drinks and snacks

-CONTACT ME IF YOU HAVE CLIMBING ROPE. It might come in handy for checking out a small cave with a steep entrance.

-We should be back to the meetup point by 8 pm.

It was a great 5 star hike with 5 star people. The take home lesson is if you want to see some of New Mexico's hidden wonders you have to get out of the car and walk. Special thanks Norm and Diana for the peanut butter and jelly burrito. Thanks Stephen looking forward to the next one.

Privileged to be added (thank your cancelled guest for me please, I'll thank John for the borrowed rope we used)... I'm getting spoiled with these trailless hikes :) not to mention first class leadership (loved the flexibility to climb up and take a peek from above at times). Refresh my memory (PLEASE POST AS AN EVENT) when and where is the book signing Stephen? April? Page One? I'll let you know what the Natural History Museum says about the Stephenasaurus bone!

Thanks to all who trusted me enough to go on this trailless hike in the middle of nowhere. With the hidden cave/tunnel, dinosaur bones, hoodoos, the slot canyon, footprint petroglyphs - and great company to share it with - I'd say it was a brilliant day. Please post your photos because I didn't take nearly enough.

If anyone else in this group is middle-aged & likes hikes in the 5-8 mile range (mostly) plus other activities, I'm soon launching a new group: Active Boomer Singles.

Sorry to those who didn't make the rsvp. I'd invite more and post my gps data, but this particular route starts on Tohajiilee land, so I'd like to keep it low key. (There is a legitimate way in, but it's 2 miles longer. More details soon.)

Sounds like a winner and everybody wants in. Can we schedule a second group or put this on the docket for an upcoming event? Soon? Or simply directions? I'd love to get out there, looks beautiful! A quarry????? Not good!
