On Jul 8, 2009, the sun will rise at 6:00 AM. We will trek up the La Luz Trail to greet Sol as she rises above Sandia Mountain. All life, without exception, would not exist without her.

We will meet at the La Luz trail head at 5:30 AM. We will go up La Luz to the 2.6 mile marker and loop along the Tramway Trail back to the La Luz about 1 mile from the trailhead. This segment is a little difficult.

You may be able to get this hike in before work.

PARKING: $3.00

Dogs are welcome but remember the ABQ Hiking and Meetup dog rules.

Dog rules:

  • 1) The dog must get along with people and other dogs.
  • 2) The dog must be capable of doing a moderate hike.
  • 3) You must be willing to keep the dog on a leash if it becomes necessary.
  • 4) You must bring adequate food and water for the dog.
  • 5) You must be willing to drive your vehicle to the trailhead.

Don't forget the doggie bags just in case.

This hike will take around 2 hours, maybe more. The distance to the turn around point is 2.6 miles. Looping back along the Tramway Tail will be close to 2 miles. Those who would like a hike before work could do a timed hike, that is hike with the group for a certain time period then turn around and hike back to the parking lot.

    •  loved it! (even though it was kinda hard to get up so early)
    •  Getting up at 4AM may seem a bit extreme for a short La Luz hike and maybe it is. It was actually quite pleasant and good exercise. Good to hike with Bill again and it was really nice to meet Liz, a veteran La Luz hiker.
    •  Great cool early morning La Luz experience. Thanks Aaron and Sue for leading this one.

Nice earlier-than-normal-for-me adventure. Great to meet Bill, Aaron, and Sue - and canines, too! The city lights in the dark with moon very pretty. Thanks for doing this, S. and A.
