Griffith Park 7am Lot #1

We have all lost 4 or so pounds in water weight on a hike, but I don't think I have ever lost 1 pound of body fat on a hike. That's the goal. It's going to be a 3500 bootcamp hike. Basically, we are hiking until we loose 3500 calories ( supposedly 1lb of body fat ) on Garmin GPS Tracker. This will probably take 4-6 hours depending on speed and difficulty of trails taken

You can call me if your interested (818) 269-1386

Sounds like a great goal, good luck!

As for caloric expenditure, a 185 lb person would have to ascend 8000 - 9000 ft to burn 3500 kcal.

Too bad Griffith doesn't have a peak that large.

This won't be all up hill, it can't be and I couldn't do it if it was. Mostly mileage and pace will account for the calories on this hike.

You realize 3500 calories is about 35 miles for a 200lb person right?

I'm just curious what the Garmin device is telling you, as there hasn't been much research into calories burned and hiking at all. I wouldn't trust what it says.

Trump is right for his flat walking estimate. Now, when you have hills, obviously less miles are needed. But how much less?

Well in my research department we have some metabolic carts (measures oxygen), so I've experimented around with it, running and walking on incline.

From this I approximated that I (185 lbs) would burn 1700 kcal for a 8 mile, 4000 ft hike. For other people, you could approximate by scaling this by weight. The more you weight, the more you'll burn.

But that is about the magnitude. I've heard many people make claims for larger amounts but that's simply hearsay, unfortunately.
