This is going to be a good workout and we will take it SLOW as usual because that's my pace. There's no shade for the first part of the trail until we reach the First Water. We can stop here to enjoy the creek then head up to Orchard Camp and enjoy the shade for a bit then head to the right of the trail to Manzanita Ridge. We will take our lunch break at the famous bench, take a little nap or just simply enjoy what this place has to offer. NO RUSH!

Bring plenty of water, snack, lunch, hat, sunscreen and wear sturdy shoes/boots for the hike and a good fun attitude.

From the 210 Freeway, exit Baldwin Ave. and go north. When you come to a traffic light where you have to go either right or left, go left to the next light and that is Baldwin Ave. Take a right and continue up Baldwin Ave. through the downtown area of Sierra Madre. Approximately ¾’s of a mile from the downtown plaza, take a right on Mira Monte. Go down about 1/3 mile and you will come to a small park on your left. Park anywhere in this area along Mira Monte.

Another Singles In Paradise outing

Why is Tahiti one of the favorite places on the planet?

It is so incredibly beautiful with the crystal clear waters of the protected lagoons, the jagged peaks that the clouds rest on, then you’ve got the people and culture! It all paints a picture of perfection that you will fall in love with. Ed Reder of Singles In Paradise has brought groups to Tahiti 8 times now.

We will start off with 1 night on the island of Tahiti when we arrive at 7:30 p.m. at the brand new Manava Suite Resort. You may want to stay right here as it's a very beautiful hotel but we'll be leaving the next day for the beautiful island of Moorea. We'll have 7-nights on Moorea, which is everything you could want out of a visit to Tahiti. It’s a small island that is mostly unchanged over the last 50 years. It's quaint pensions and cute restaurants, palm trees that dip over the water and the dreamy, multi-hued water in the lagoons that the reef protects. We’ve been given an incredible group discount at the beautiful Pearl Resort, a truly upscale, 4-star resort situated in a picturesque setting with an infinity pool, white sand beach and over-water bungalows. We stayed here in 2003 and 2006 and all had the times of our lives. Check out www.pearlresorts.com/moorea to take a look.

UPDATE 11/3/09:

Ok. Sorry for the long delay in getting the directions and meeting spot set up. Here it is though:

Directions: http://www.griffithobservatory.org/vshuttle.html

Meeting location:
The central monument in the middle of the grassy area. Here's a pic (meet at the monument to the right):
http://eecue.com/img/images_pic-medium-27795-Griffith_Observatory.jpg

Meeting time is between 645-7. We start at 7. If you arrive late, just look for the guy with the messenger bag and tripod.

Here's my agenda, you can break off into groups or go on your own though.

1. Visit inside Observatory then pictures of the exterior and of the view. That's it.

Also, bring snacks and water if needed. I won't be able to get dinner afterward, but some of you may. You can organize that tomorrow.

Looking forward to it. See you then!

Well, I guess it's that time. Time to grab that tripod that's been hanging out in the corner and make use of it; and the camera that's been sitting in the bag for a month untouched.

My goal for this was to take pics of the sunset. But with daylight savings and the coming winter, it'll be going down at 5. So that's out of the plan.

Second option. Take pics of the city and of the Observatory itself. I have yet to check out this place, so I have no idea what to expect. I'm kind of excited!

Anyone who's been here please leave a comment or email me any enlightening tips you may have. I'm planning it on a Wednesday in hopes of avoiding crowds and making it easier to park. Carpooling would be helpful. We can organize that as the day nears.

More info on where to meet and directions as the day nears.

But here's the previous photowalks with pictures!!!!
Chinatown/Little Tokyo http://hiking.meetup.com/196/calendar/9191726/
Old Town Pasadena http://hiking.meetup.com/196/calendar/9300483/
Olvera Street http://hiking.meetup.com/196/calendar/9263634/
Melrose http://hiking.meetup.com/196/calendar/9412085/

Heavy rain cancels. Light rain does not. Snow will not either. Fires, maybe.

Also, just to answer some questions:

No, a camera isn't required. But if you don't have one, you may find yourself rather bored.
Yes, a tripod would help to steady shots. But you can always use a wall or anything stable.
Yes, I do accept tips.

We'll do our traditional semi beginner hike. It's a semi hilly 4 mile/600 foot hike. This hike is @ 90 minutes

Legend for hikes: These hikes run year 'round every Tuesday. In the leader's (subjective) mind, the hikes are generally easiest the first Tuesday of the month and most challenging the last Tuesday of the month, with everything progressive in between. Beginners are encouraged to come to the first Tuesday of the month. Beginners will receive doses of encouragement the second Tuesday of the month to keep up if unable. The 3-4-5 Tuesday's of the month it is expected anyone that can't keep up with the leader will turn back

The fine print:
Wildlife (snakes, bobcats, mountain lions etc) seen in the park, be aware of your surroundings and stay alert at all times. Polite dogs on leashes are allowed. If you plan on bringing a dog, please email the organizer beforehand.

Bring Along:

Hiking boots and at least 1 Liter Water. Layered clothing in case it's cold. Long pants in case it's hot, to prevent being bitten by insects. Mosquito and tic spray (available at Sports Chalet) are recommended.

No bright (white) flashlights. Red, Blue flashlights are ok.
If you get to the lot after we meet, Sierra Club hikes start at 7:00PM on the opposite end of the lot.
We do start ON TIME, no matter how much traffic is on the freeways, inside the park, including if our parking lots are being used by movie crews. Allow yourself enough time for any unexpected surprises.

Directions:

134 Westbound (From Eagle Rock/Pasadena Area): Stay in the far right lane as if you are getting on Interstate 5. The Zoo Drive exit is almost hidden at the I5/134 Interchange. Exit Zoo Drive and proceed on the road, underneath the freeway, and make a left at the first stop sign (Western Heritage Way). At the fourth stop sign, make a right hand turn. There's no street sign, but there should be a sign in the median stating the Merry Go Round is to the right. Make a right hand turn. Continue up the road. The road forces you to make a sharp right hand turn into a parking lot. Go through the parking lot. You'll hit a small dark road (it's lit if it's daylight savings time) for a short period of time, followed by a brightly lit lot. Park in the back of the lot (the part you entered in). Meet at the back of the lot at the back side of the "yield" sign, near the driveway entrance to the lower parking lot. You won't be able to see the actual yield sign, but you'll see the pole.

134 Eastbound (From Burbank area): Exit Victory and make a right hand turn. Make a left hand turn into Griffith Park. Go five stop signs.

From Interstate 5 (either direction)
Go West on Los Feliz. Make a right on Crystal Springs and drive into Griffith Park. Go two stop signs and make a left turn.

Where to meet: See above. If you know the park well, it is Merry Go Round Lot #2, just at the path to the lower lot.

For those who survive Halloween. Five miles roundtrip. Easy to moderate, but novice hikers are likely to have difficulty with the elevation gain as the trail to Mt. Hollywood is a steady uphill climb.

Up Western Canyon to the hilltop behind the Observatory (not to be confused with the Hollywood sign a mile to the west above Beachwood Canyon). Then down along different trails and fireroads with a stop at the Observatory. Elevation gain of 1,000 feet. Approximately two and a half hours, including stops to enjoy the 360-degree panoramic views of the Greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area from atop Mt. Hollywood and at the recently renovated Observatory. Those who wish to linger can visit the Observatory exhibits before descending the last mile on their own along the fire road to the Fern Dell parking lot.

Enter Griffith Park from Los Feliz Blvd., 100 yards east of Western Avenue, between a bust of Leif Ericsson (leader of the Vikings who reached Newfoundland 1,000 years ago) and a statue of a "rampant" (i.e., standing on his hindlegs) bear. Don't confuse this entrance with the Vermont/Hillhurst entrance, also on Los Feliz Blvd., a mile to the east. Drive uphill about 0.6 mile into the park, past Trails Restaurant on the left and children's playground equipment on the right, to the entrance of a large parking lot on your left. Look for a white Volvo sedan parked on the far side of the parking lot and one or two small black dogs (thought by some to resemble miniature black bears). Parking is free.

The group will depart at 8 a.m. You should plan to reach the parking lot a few minutes early, but if you miss us there are multiple trails and fireroads leading up to Mt. Hollywood and to the Observatory. You will enjoy your walk in the park with or without the group.

Trails Restaurant, 0.2 mile from the parking lot, serves breakfast for those want to eat under the trees after the hike.

My mobile number is 323-354-0168.

Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it. There is no "Maybe" option.

Joining this hike is entirely voluntary and participants assume all associated risks. It is each hiker's responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate, with appropriate provisions and equipment. If you had the chance to hike with me last weekend to Cucamonga Peak it will be the same pace, SLOW with more frequent breaks. This hike is design for those who's looking for a good challenge at a slower pace. We will take our early lunch/brunch at the top of Hastings Peak then return back the same way. Bring water, snack, lunch, hat, sunscreen and wear sturdy shoes/boots.

We will be starting out in the parking area at Bailey Park. Follow a wood-chip path NW to a turnstile. You step out onto a paved road passing a debris dam. The pavement ends at a junction. The Live Oak nature trail is to your right, across a small bridge. Continue straight N, soon crossing a small stream. Just beyond the trail splits.

Begin to switchback, climbing steadily. At about 1 mile you reach a bench where you can rest and look over the San Gabriel Valley which offers a fantastic view on a clear day. Continuing ahead, you snake around the canyon in a back and forth pattern. There is little to no shade most of the way.

From the 210 Foothill Freeway Arcadia, exit Baldwin Avenue and go north (Straight). Baldwin Avenue ends at Carter st. Turn Left. Take Carter about 1/3mi. The Parking lot will be on your right. If you reach a dead-end, you just passed it.

hike leader: fearless leader Jose

Ok I called the place and It is open and untouched by the fires.
So just like i promised last month, we are going to do this hike no matter
what. Even if it rains, we still go! even if there is a fire we still go! Even if i
get the swine flu we still go. (don't worry I'll bring a mask!)
So we are going! (Unless I can't wake up!)

when:sunday Oct, 25, 2009 9:00am

what to bring: water, hiking shoes, snack, bathing suit if you want to swim.
dress for weather.

directions: ok the closest freeway is the 210 freeway and there is different exits from
the east and west. So i suggest just mapquest or goggle the address.
be aware that the address is just a big sign and a mailbox. and a road.
Look for it just after you pass New York Drive on the right side.
Just take the road down and you will see a parking lot. in the middle of the
parking lot is where i will be

hike level: Beginner 2/10 400 feet gain, 3 1/2 miles roundtrip 2 hours

Ok this is the easiest hike I do. This hike is very easy.
The hardest thing you will do is rock hopping and stream crossing.
But the good news is that our destination is a waterfall with a SWIMMING HOLE!!!!!!!.
I know it is cold right now but by it might get hot enough to take a swim.
But even if it is cold, I will still go in. So what if i turn blue.

The hike starts out at the eaton canyon nature center. We walk to the dry river
and just follow it all the way to the falls and come the same way back.
Dogs Ok but must be on a leash at all times
kids ok but you are responsible
email me if you have questions
