We'll do our traditional semi beginner hike. It's a semi hilly 4 mile/600 foot hike. This hike is @ 90 minutes

Legend for hikes: These hikes run year 'round every Tuesday. In the leader's (subjective) mind, the hikes are generally easiest the first Tuesday of the month and most challenging the last Tuesday of the month, with everything progressive in between. Beginners are encouraged to come to the first Tuesday of the month. Beginners will receive doses of encouragement the second Tuesday of the month to keep up if unable. The 3-4-5 Tuesday's of the month it is expected anyone that can't keep up with the leader will turn back

The fine print:
Wildlife (snakes, bobcats, mountain lions etc) seen in the park, be aware of your surroundings and stay alert at all times. Polite dogs on leashes are allowed. If you plan on bringing a dog, please email the organizer beforehand.

Bring Along:

Hiking boots and at least 1 Liter Water. Layered clothing in case it's cold. Long pants in case it's hot, to prevent being bitten by insects. Mosquito and tic spray (available at Sports Chalet) are recommended.

No bright (white) flashlights. Red, Blue flashlights are ok.
If you get to the lot after we meet, Sierra Club hikes start at 7:00PM on the opposite end of the lot.
We do start ON TIME, no matter how much traffic is on the freeways, inside the park, including if our parking lots are being used by movie crews. Allow yourself enough time for any unexpected surprises.

Directions:

From 134 Freeway:
(Note, if you are not familiar with Griffith Park Drive, this is a dark single lane route. You are better off taking I5 directions)

Exit Forest Lawn. (If coming from Westbound go straight, from Eastbound, Go Right). Make a left on Zoo Drive. Make a right hand turn on Griffith Park Drive. Road weaves through Griffith Park. Continue on road until you hit Crystal Springs Road. Make a right hand turn on Crystal Springs. There's no street sign at the next stop sign, but there should be a sign in the median stating the Merry Go Round is to the right. Make a right hand turn. Continue up the road. The road forces you to make a sharp right hand turn into a parking lot. Go through the parking lot. You'll hit a small dark road (it's lit if it's daylight savings time) for a short period of time, followed by a brightly lit lot. Park in the back of the lot (the part you entered in). Meet at the back of the lot at the back side of the "yield" sign, near the driveway entrance to the lower parking lot. You won't be able to see the actual yield sign, but you'll see the pole.

From Interstate 5 (either direction)
Go West on Los Feliz. Make a right on Riverside drive into Griffith Park. Go two stop signs and make a left turn.

Where to meet: See above. If you know the park well, it is Merry Go Round Lot #2, just at the path to the lower lot.

Angeles Forest Service Volunteers

Technically they are named "The Scenic Mt. Lowe Railway Historical Committee"...and as an officially recognized group have been taking care of the Echo Mtn/Mt. Lowe areas for years as volunteers for the Forest Service. I, Lee Zebold, have been a part of the group since 1995.

This is not a hike. We drive up the fire road to the work area. We will split up in groups to carpool. If you have a truck or heavy van, all the better.

We need a few good workers to help with a project at and near the Trail Camp at the Mt. Lowe Tavern (Alpine Tavern). You don't have to work the whole time, but do what you feel like.

The Station Fire did extensive damage to the terrain and brush, leaving exposed bare hills that could end up causing tremendous flood damage to the campground area.

We need some good workers to help with heavy labor - pick, shovel, sledge hammer....etc. to shore up and build flood breaks prior to the oncoming rainy season. We have the tools.

Don't forget your gloves.

On our website we have pictures of what it looked like back in January, 2005. Scroll down about 1/3 the way
http://www.mtlowe.net/projects_6.htm

15 people should provide great assistance to the Volunteer Group.

We will meet at the Gate on Fire Road going to Mt. Lowe. Take Chaney Trail off of Loma Alta and drive the winding road up to the top (abt 2 miles). You come upon a Y in the road...turn right and the locked gate is right there. If you turn left, you will head down another hill for Mallard Cyn. Don't go that way.

We can park inside the gate so no need for an Adventure Pass.

Bring your lunch. We should be finished at 5 PM and head back down the hill for home.

Dec 6 7:45 AM

Sorry, this Meetup is FULL but a Waiting List is available.

This is a strenuous hike of 13 miles with an elevation gain of more than 4,000 feet above Altadena and Sierra Madre through some of the most scenic parts of the Angeles Crest. The middle section of the hike, Idlehour Trail across the middle reaches of Eaton Canyon, is new terrain for me. I have hiked the other sections--Sam Merrill Trail from Altadena to Echo Mountain, from Echo Mountain to Inspiration Point via Castle Canyon, and the old Mt. Wilson toll road to Henninger Flat--on multiple occasions.

Unless you recently have hiked at least 10 miles with an elevation gain of at least 3,000 feet this is NOT the right hike for you. Expect a steady pace (neither "slow poke" nor fast) with breaks at Echo Mountain, Inspiration Point, Idlehour Camp and Henninger Flat. Bring water and pack a lunch.

We will meet at 7:45 am near the entrance/exit for the Mt. Wilson Toll Road and then shuttle in half of our vehicles two miles west to the start of the Sam Merrill trail.

Exit I-210 at Altadena Drive, two exits east of Lake Avenue, turn left under the freeway at the bottom of the ramp, and proceed 2.9 miles north (toward the mountains). Turn right onto Crescent Drive--just past the entrance to Mendocino Lane on the left--and go 0.1 mile to the intersection of Crescent and Pinehurst Drive. Park on Crescent. (Parking on Pinehurst is prohibited. You will be ticketed if you park there.)

To carpool:
Those coming from the LA Basin and the San Fernando Valley are welcome to meet us at the parking lot for the tennis courts and soccer field near the southeast corner of Griffith Park -– on Riverside Drive 100 yards south of the intersection of Riverside and Los Feliz Blvd. To get there, exit from the I-5 at Los Feliz, proceed west to the first stop light, turn left (south) onto Riverside, and then left at the first driveway into the parking lot. Do NOT turn north from Los Feliz into Griffith Park. (If you cannot see the tennis courts and the soccer field immediately after you turn onto Riverside, you are going the wrong way.) The carpool point meeting time is 7:15 AM. Don't be late. We will leave without you since it takes about 25 minutes to drive to upper Altadena.

My mobile number is 323-354-0168. In the event of rain, this hike will be postponed to a later date.

Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it. There is no "Maybe" option. If you want to bring more than one person with you, please contact me.

Joining this hike is entirely voluntary and participants assume all associated risks. It is each hiker's responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate, with appropriate provisions and equipment. The Los Angeles Hiking Meetup group and the hike organizer make no warranties about the safety or supervision of these activities.

Hike Level - 5 / 10 - Intermediate
Distance - 5 miles round trip
We meet at the intersection of Lake Ave. and Loma Alta...at the Cobb Estate gates.

Be careful where you park....check the signs...they give $60 tickets

This is our 4th annual event, and we will be joining up with my group, the Volunteer Forest Rangers who have been doing this for 20 plus years.

WE will cook breakfast....I am making arrangements for a Coleman Stove to be brought up, and I will bring a skillet, some eggs and stuff to put in them (omelet style) Please bring eggs and stuff to cook, and an extra skillet, too..also I will bring paper plates and plastic utensils, but it would help if others brought some also

There will be Navy Jets flying over the Parade and possibly the Stealth Bomber will be scheduled to fly over at the end of the Parade. We will be able to have a birds eye view from atop Echo Mtn.

As it takes about 1.5 hours (for me) to reach Echo Mtn from the top of Lake Ave., we should be there by 8 AM to watch the Stealth Bomber and see the beautiful California sunshine bloom with the new day. If any of you are concerned, I am probably the slowest leader in the Club. If you need rest stops, I'm your man. And if you find yourself just itching to go faster, you can pass me up and get there first. There will be others on this trail, and you cannot get lost.

Traffic can be a problem because of the New Year's Parade in Pasadena. The Freeway (134) can get clogged even at that early hour so give yourself enough time. I come from the west on the 134 and turn up the 210 (near the Rose Bowl) and travel north and exit Lincoln north to get to Loma Alta. See the Direction links posted here.

Dress warm, bring snacks or food. Dogs NO.

If you RSVP as a Maybe and don't go...you take away the chance for the Yes people.
