We will take a 5 mile/800ft hike to Glendale Peak. This hike is @ 90 minutes.

The fine print:
Wildlife (snakes, bobcats, mountain lions etc) seen in the park, be aware of your surroundings and stay alert at all times. Polite dogs on leashes are allowed. If you plan on bringing a dog, please email the organizer beforehand.

Legend for hikes: These hikes run year 'round every Tuesday. In the leader's (subjective) mind, the hikes are generally easiest the first Tuesday of the month and most challenging the last Tuesday of the month, with everything progressive in between. Beginners are encouraged to come to the first Tuesday of the month. Beginners will receive doses of encouragement the second Tuesday of the month to keep up if unable. The 3-4-5 Tuesday's of the month it is expected anyone that can't keep up with the leader will turn back

Bring Along:

Hiking boots and at least 1 Liter Water. Layered clothing in case it's cold. Long pants in case it's hot, to prevent being bitten by insects. Mosquito and tic spray (available at Sports Chalet) are recommended.

No bright (white) flashlights please. Red, Blue flashlights are ok.

If you get to the lot after we meet, Sierra Club hikes start at 7:00PM on the opposite end of the lot.
We do start ON TIME, no matter how much traffic is on the freeways, inside the park, including if our parking lots are being used by movie crews. Allow yourself enough time for any unexpected surprises.

Directions:

4730 Crystal Springs Dr (MapQuest or Yahoo! Maps)
134 Westbound (From Eagle Rock/Pasadena Area): Stay in the far right lane as if you are getting on Interstate 5. The Zoo Drive exit is almost hidden at the I5/134 Interchange. Exit Zoo Drive and proceed on the road, underneath the freeway, and make a left at the first stop sign (Western Heritage Way). At the fourth stop sign, make a right hand turn. There's no street sign, but there should be a sign in the median stating the Merry Go Round is to the right. Make a right hand turn. Continue up the road. The road forces you to make a sharp right hand turn into a parking lot. Go through the parking lot. You'll hit a small dark road (it's lit if it's daylight savings time) for a short period of time, followed by a brightly lit lot. Park in the back of the lot (the part you entered in). Meet at the back of the lot at the back side of the "yield" sign, near the driveway entrance to the lower parking lot. You won't be able to see the actual yield sign, but you'll see the pole.

134 Eastbound (From Burbank area): Exit Victory and make a right hand turn. Make a left hand turn into Griffith Park. Go five stop signs.

From Interstate 5 (either direction)
Go West on Los Feliz. Make a right on Crystal Springs and drive into Griffith Park. Go two stop signs and make a left turn.

Hike leader: fearless leader jose

When: Sunday August 2, 2009 9:00am
Ok there hasn't been a beginner hike in a while, but some people
like the harder stuff. So this hike is for both. You can come and just
join the first part. For those who want a harder hike will stay for
part 2 and hike til we get to deer park or Jose gets tired.

What to bring: WATER, hat, snack, dress for weather, hiking shoes, and 5 dollars if you want to park
in the parking lot

Hike Level: Part 1--- 3 1/2 miles roundtrip, 740 elevation gain 1 1/2 to 2 hours
Part 2--- until Jose gets tired or you keep going.

Directions: from the 210 freeway in monrovia exit myrtle. Monrovia is near the
210 and 605 interchange. Head north on myrtle, turn right on foothill , about a 1/4
mile turn left on canyon. canyon looks like it end in a mile. but it doesn't , it bends to the
right. Thats just a little street connecting to it. You will see a three foot stone
sign that says canyon park. Make a right and follow the road for 1/2 a mile til
you get to the parking lot on the left I will be there. it costs 5 dollars to park here.
If you don't want to pay, arrive early and park south of three foot stone sign and walk
1/2 mile to the parking lot.

Hike description: There are two parts to this hike Part 1 is beginner, part 2 is medium.

Part 1 We will start on a little trail that is nice and goes all the way to the waterfall. There will be easy
stream crossings. the only problem the trail is not for anyone afraid of heights.
The trail is wide and safe. But in a couple of areas we will pass a couple of cliff areas. It
might scare people afraid of heights. when we reach the waterfall we will rest then go to the
nature center for a look and a group picture. We will return on the road.

Part 2 on the road there is a connector road that goes up to the Saw pit damm. here
those who want to turn back to cars can do it. For those who want to continue we will
continue til Jose gets too tired to keep going or we reach deer Park. It is an easy road and
trail we will go on and return on, but it is steep at certain areas and you will get a workout.
Try it, if you can't do it just return the same way, there is only one way there and back and you
can't get lost.

Dogs Ok But must be on a leash AT ALL TIMES
kids ok but you are responsible

Not for beginners, but this is a leisurely hike with plenty of shade, streams and ponds. The Winter Creek Loop is a 5-mile hike, ascending to Hoegee's Camp along the Lower Winter Creek Trail, and then descending along the Upper Winter Creek Trail. At the beginning of the hike, we will add a 2-mile extension along shady Santa Anita Creek to Sturtevant Falls, for a total distance of slightly over 7 miles and an elevation gain of about 1,300 feet. Beer and burgers afterwards at the Chantry Flat Pack Station for those who don't have to rush off.

Be prepared to rock hop across Winter Creek at several spots. The Upper Winter Creek trail runs along the side of the canyon. The trail is well-maintained, but narrow.

Start time 8 am at Chantry Flat. Meet in the upper parking lot. Drive through the first parking lot and into the main lot above it. Look for a white Volvo sedan and two small black dogs (thought by some to resemble small black bears). Plan to arrive a few minutes early. Sometimes both parking lots are full, in that case you need to turn around and park on the road leading to the parking lots . . . all the more reason to arrive early. The drive from the Santa Anita exit of I-210 to the parking lot at Chantry Flat takes about 20 minutes. Consider carpooling (see below). We will return to Chantry Flat by noon.

Take I-210 to Arcadia (a few miles east of Pasadena) and exit at Santa Anita Avenue. Turn north (toward the mountains) at the bottom of the ramp and drive through residential Arcadia. Santa Anita Avenue turns into a narrow road running along the side of Santa Anita Canyon. The road terminates at Chantry Flat, where there are parking and restroom facilities.

PLEASE NOTE: A National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parking.
You can purchase an Adventure Pass on-site when you arrive at Chantry Flat OR at most Sporting Goods Stores (e.g., REI or Big 5). A single day pass costs $5; an annual pass $30.

To carpool:
Those coming from the LA Basin and the San Fernando Valley are welcome to meet us at the parking lot for the tennis courts and soccer field near the southeast corner of Griffith Park -– on Riverside Drive 100 yards south of the intersection of Riverside and Los Feliz Blvd. To get there, exit from the I-5 at Los Feliz, proceed west to the first stop light, turn left (south) onto Riverside, and then left at the first driveway into the parking lot. Do NOT turn north from Los Feliz into Griffith Park. (If you cannot see the tennis courts and the soccer field immediately after you turn onto Riverside, you are going the wrong way.) The carpool point meeting time is 7:15 AM. Don't be late. We will leave without you since it takes 35 to 40 minutes to drive to Chantry Flat. And don't carpool with me unless you want to spend 30 to 45 minutes at the pack station after the hike enjoying the beer, burgers and conversation.

My mobile number is 323-354-0168.

Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it. There is no "Maybe" option. If you want to bring more than one person with you, please contact me.

Sorry for the late notice. I haven't been up here since there was a bit of snow. So it'll be good to see how it is all warm.

Once up there though, I plan on staying up there for a little bit. Probably take a nap or just basically lounge around. You're welcome to join me or leave whenever you'd like to. The trail back down is easy enough to follow.

Be sure to bring enough water, a lunch, and whatever other miscellaneous items that you'll need.

Total mileage is about 8.5 miles with roughly 3500' gain. I plan on keeping my pace which is moderate. Be sure you know the way or let me know if you plan on staying behind. The path up is easy and I can direct you where to go.
