This hike is 4 miles/800 ft is known to the regulars as the "backyard hike". Most of the elevation gain is in a short period of time. The trail on the steep ascent is hard to find because of the fires, so a little bit of adventure is required for this hike. This hike is @ 100 minutes

Legend for hikes: These hikes run year 'round every Tuesday. In the leader's (subjective) mind, the hikes are generally easiest the first Tuesday of the month and most challenging the last Tuesday of the month, with everything progressive in between. Beginners are encouraged to come to the first Tuesday of the month. Beginners will receive doses of encouragement the second Tuesday of the month to keep up if unable. The 3-4-5 Tuesday's of the month it is expected anyone that can't keep up with the leader will turn back

The fine print:
Wildlife (snakes, bobcats, mountain lions etc) seen in the park, be aware of your surroundings and stay alert at all times. Polite dogs on leashes are allowed. If you plan on bringing a dog, please email the organizer beforehand.

Bring Along
Hiking boots and at least 1 Liter Water. Layered clothing in case it's cold. Long pants in case it's hot, to prevent being bitten by insects. Mosquito and tic spray (available at Sports Chalet) are recommended.
No bright (white) flashlights. Red, Blue flashlights are ok.
If you get to the lot after we meet, Sierra Club hikes start at 7:00PM on the opposite end of the lot.
We do start ON TIME, no matter how much traffic is on the freeways, inside the park, including if our parking lots are being used by movie crews. Allow yourself enough time for any unexpected surprises.

Directions:

134 Westbound (From Eagle Rock/Pasadena Area): Stay in the far right lane as if you are getting on Interstate 5. The Zoo Drive exit is almost hidden at the I5/134 Interchange. Exit Zoo Drive and proceed on the road, underneath the freeway, and make a left at the first stop sign (Western Heritage Way). At the fourth stop sign, make a right hand turn. There's no street sign, but there should be a sign in the median stating the Merry Go Round is to the right. Make a right hand turn. Continue up the road. The road forces you to make a sharp right hand turn into a parking lot. Go through the parking lot. You'll hit a small dark road (it's lit if it's daylight savings time) for a short period of time, followed by a brightly lit lot. Park in the back of the lot (the part you entered in). Meet at the back of the lot at the back side of the "yield" sign, near the driveway entrance to the lower parking lot. You won't be able to see the actual yield sign, but you'll see the pole.

134 Eastbound (From Burbank area): Exit Victory and make a right hand turn. Make a left hand turn into Griffith Park. Go five stop signs. Since the Angeles National Forest is closed till further notice as a result of the Station Fire, and I am not inclined to travel farther afield this weekend, I am going to reprise last weekend's hike in Griffith Park from the Fern Dell to Mt. Hollywood and back to the Fern Dell via the Observatory. Five miles roundtrip.

Easy to moderate, but novice hikers are likely to have difficulty with the elevation gain as the trail to Mt. Hollywood is a steady uphill climb.

Up Western Canyon to the hilltop behind the Observatory (not to be confused with the Hollywood sign a mile to the west above Beachwood Canyon). Then down along different trails and fireroads with a stop at the Observatory. Elevation gain of 1,000 feet. Approximately two and a half hours, including stops to enjoy the 360-degree panoramic views of the Greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area from atop Mt. Hollywood and at the recently renovated Observatory. Those who wish to linger can visit the Observatory exhibits before descending the last mile on their own along the fire road to the Fern Dell parking lot.

Enter Griffith Park from Los Feliz Blvd., 100 yards east of Western Avenue, between a bust of Leif Ericsson (leader of the Vikings who reached Newfoundland 1,000 years ago) and a statue of a "rampant" (i.e., standing on his hindlegs) bear. Don't confuse this entrance with the Vermont/Hillhurst entrance, also on Los Feliz Blvd., a mile to the east. Drive uphill about 0.6 mile into the park, past Trails Restaurant on the left and children's playground equipment on the right, to the entrance of a large parking lot on your left. Look for a white Volvo sedan parked on the far side of the parking lot and one or two small black dogs (thought by some to resemble miniature black bears). Parking is free.

The group will depart at 8 a.m. You should plan to reach the parking lot a few minutes early, but if you miss us there are multiple trails and fireroads leading up to Mt. Hollywood and to the Observatory. You will enjoy your walk in the park with or without the group.

Trails Restaurant, 0.2 mile from the parking lot, serves breakfast for those want to eat under the trees after the hike.

My mobile number is 323-354-0168.

Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it. There is no "Maybe" option.

Joining this hike is entirely voluntary and participants assume all associated risks. It is each hiker's responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate, with appropriate provisions and equipment. The Los Angeles Hiking Meetup group and the hike organizer make no warranties about the safety or supervision of these activities.

If you have always wanted the challenge of the 3 "T"s, but at a "Slow-Poke" tempo, then this hike is for you!
This is a strenuous, 10-mile hike with an elevation gain of 3,400 feet, with altitudes above 7,000 feet most of the way and three summits (Timber, Telegraph, and Thunder) rising over 8,000 feet. Normally, this is considered a "Hard-Core" hike, but we will be taking it at a slower pace with more frequent breaks. Bring plenty of water and pack a lunch. Although there is some shade in the Canyon and in the trees along the mountain ridgelines, wear a hat and/or sunscreen. It is midsummer and solar radiation is stronger at higher altitudes. Plan to be on the trail for at least eight hours. Also bring $10 for the ski lift from Baldy Notch back down to the road. By taking the ski lift at the end of the hike, we shorten the descent and minimize wear and tear on our knees.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING SPECIAL DIRECTIONS!
To reach the trailhead, take the 10 or the 210 freeway east from Los Angeles to Upland and exit at Mountain Avenue (NOT the Mountain Avenue exit in Monrovia 20 miles to the west!) heading north toward the mountains. Follow Mountain Avenue to the intersection with Shinn Road, then veer left. Continue to Mt. Baldy Road, then veer right and follow Mt. Baldy Road for several miles up San Antonio Canyon to the village of Mt. Baldy. Continue past the village several miles to the end of the road. We will meet at the parking lot right next to the ski-lift, then do some carpooling down to the parking lot for Icehouse canyon where we will start our hike. A National Forest Adventure Pass is required to park in both places.
Note: PLEASE BE ON TIME OR EARLY AS WE WILL NEED TO DO SOME CAR SHUTTLING DOWN TO THE ICE HOUSE CANYON LOT SO THAT WE CAN TAKE THE SKI-LIFT DOWN. CAR-POOLING IS ENCOURAGED
Afterward, we will be meeting for food and a post hike celebration for those that are interested.

what to bring: water, hiking shoes, snack, bathing suit if you want to swim.
dress for weather.

directions: ok the closest freeway is the 210 freeway and there is different exits from
the east and west. So i suggest just mapquest or goggle the address.
be aware that the address is just a big sign and a mailbox. and a road.
Look for it just after you pass New York Drive on the right side.
Just take the road down and you will see a parking lot. in the middle of the
parking lot is where i will be

hike level: Beginner 2/10 400 feet gain, 3 1/2 miles roundtrip 2 hours

Ok this is the easiest hike I do. This hike is very easy.
The hardest thing you will do is rock hopping and stream crossing.
But the good news is that our destination is a waterfall with a SWIMMING HOLE!!!!!!!.
It has been hot lately and i feel like taking a swim while a waterfall hits me
on the head.

The hike starts out at the eaton canyon nature center. We walk to the dry river
and just follow it all the way to the falls and come the same way back.

View sunset and a (nearly full) moonrise on a weekend evening for the last time in 2009 from a hilltop in Eugene Debs Regional Park just east of the 110 Freeway about halfway between Downtown Los Angeles and Pasadena.

This is, in truth, a stroll rather than a hike. We meet in the parking lot at 6:30 pm, walk less than a mile uphill to a large pond surrounded by trees where we can watch sunset over Santa Monica Bay at 7:13 pm, walk to the other side of the pond to watch moonrise over the San Gabriel Mountains at 7:35 pm, and walk downhill to the parking lot by 8:15 pm before twilight turns to dark.

Take the 110 Freeway northbound (toward Pasadena) to the Via Marisol exit or southbound (toward Downtown Los Angeles) to the Avenue 57 exit. From the Via Marisol exit turn right directly onto Via Marisol; from the Avenue 57 exit turn right onto Avenue 57 and then turn right again onto Via Marisol. Proceed 0.3 mile on Via Marisol and turn right onto Monterey Road. Proceed 0.8 mile on Monterey Road and turn right into the entrance of Eugene Debs Regional Park. Follow the winding road about one-half mile uphill to the parking lot. Look for a white Volvo sedan parked on the right (north) side of the lot.

I will start to walk uphill no later than 6:35 pm. If you arrive late, follow the path uphill from the north side of the lot.

My mobile number is 323-354-0168.
