This hike is 4 miles/800 ft is known to the regulars as the "backyard hike". Most of the elevation gain is in a short period of time. The trail on the steep ascent is hard to find because of the fires, so a little bit of adventure is required for this hike. This hike is @ 100 minutes

Legend for hikes: These hikes run year 'round every Tuesday. In the leader's (subjective) mind, the hikes are generally easiest the first Tuesday of the month and most challenging the last Tuesday of the month, with everything progressive in between. Beginners are encouraged to come to the first Tuesday of the month. Beginners will receive doses of encouragement the second Tuesday of the month to keep up if unable. The 3-4-5 Tuesday's of the month it is expected anyone that can't keep up with the leader will turn back

The fine print:
Wildlife (snakes, bobcats, mountain lions etc) seen in the park, be aware of your surroundings and stay alert at all times. Polite dogs on leashes are allowed. If you plan on bringing a dog, please email the organizer beforehand.

Bring Along
Hiking boots and at least 1 Liter Water. Layered clothing in case it's cold. Long pants in case it's hot, to prevent being bitten by insects. Mosquito and tic spray (available at Sports Chalet) are recommended.
No bright (white) flashlights. Red, Blue flashlights are ok.
If you get to the lot after we meet, Sierra Club hikes start at 7:00PM on the opposite end of the lot.
We do start ON TIME, no matter how much traffic is on the freeways, inside the park, including if our parking lots are being used by movie crews. Allow yourself enough time for any unexpected surprises.

Directions:

134 Westbound (From Eagle Rock/Pasadena Area): Stay in the far right lane as if you are getting on Interstate 5. The Zoo Drive exit is almost hidden at the I5/134 Interchange. Exit Zoo Drive and proceed on the road, underneath the freeway, and make a left at the first stop sign (Western Heritage Way). At the fourth stop sign, make a right hand turn. There's no street sign, but there should be a sign in the median stating the Merry Go Round is to the right. Make a right hand turn. Continue up the road. The road forces you to make a sharp right hand turn into a parking lot. Go through the parking lot. You'll hit a small dark road (it's lit if it's daylight savings time) for a short period of time, followed by a brightly lit lot. Park in the back of the lot (the part you entered in). Meet at the back of the lot at the back side of the "yield" sign, near the driveway entrance to the lower parking lot. You won't be able to see the actual yield sign, but you'll see the pole.

134 Eastbound (From Burbank area): Exit Victory and make a right hand turn. Make a left hand turn into Griffith Park. Go five stop signs.

From Interstate 5 (either direction)
Go West on Los Feliz. Make a right on Crystal Springs and drive into Griffith Park. Go two stop signs and make a left turn.

Where to meet: See above. If you know the park well, it is Merry Go Round Lot #2, just at the path to the lower lot.

Hike Leader: Fearless Leader Jose

Ok I have been lazy and sick and i haven't posted a hike in awhile. So here
goes

Directions: Ok trust goggle maps or your GPS and you might get Lost like some poor people
last time. In other words DON'T TRUST GOGGLE MAPS OR YOUR GPS----- LISTEN AND FOLLOW
MY DIRECTIONS. THOSE DUMB THINGS THINK DIRT ROADS THAT ARE CLOSED AND UNPASSABLE
ARE STILL OPEN!!!!!!!! THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO GET THERE SO LISTEN UP!!!!!!!
From where ever you are get to the 405 freeway. head towards west L.A . In
west L.A. you will exit sunset blvd. (That is near the getty center) Then you will turn west
heading towards the ocean. Then you will turn right heading north on Mandeville Canyon Road.
You will be on that road for a while and I do mean for a while. Then you will reach Garden
Land Road. Find a place to park and I should be there.

When Sunday Oct 18, 9:30am 2009

What to bring: Hiking shoes, water, snack, dress for weather, hat, sunblock

Hike Level: Advanced beginner 4 out of 10. 950 feet gain and loss, 5 to 6 miles roundtrip
walk up slow, walk medium downhill. around 2 1/2 hours

This is a very cool area to go to and explore.
The place used to be a military base for the cold war, Now it is a park where we can look and
explore to our hearts content. It has a five story platform in which we can take stairs up
and have good view of the surrounding area.

Hike description: The hike is very easy in terms of difficulty. No cliffs, no hard parts. The hike is
just one trail and the rest of the hike is on fireroads. but it is going up high and you will get a
workout. There is also no shade on the trails and roads, so this hike
will only be done in cool weather. we will do a big loop and the word of the day is left. In other
words, at all forks of the road we will make a left and we will get back to the cars.
So when we get to the base, we will relax, enjoy the views and have our snacks.
Then go back down to our cars
kids allowed but you are responsible for them
dogs ok but with a leash at all times
Only Heavy rain cancels.
Light rain will not cancel.

OCT. 10 UPDATE: Chantry Flat is open and we are confirmed for Sturtevant's Camp next Sunday, Oct. 18. The trail to Newcomb's Pass is off-limits; consequently, no side-trip from the Camp to peer into the smoldering remains of the San Gabriel Wilderness.

You must bring $5 (cash only) for this event. That gives our group full access to Sturtevant's Camp for several hours. I will collect before we leave the parking lot at Chantry Flat. If you do not bring $5, I will direct you to other trails in Santa Anita Canyon.

No dogs on this hike. Sturtevant's Camp only allows dogs on a leash. We will be at the Camp for two to three hours. You will want to be able to do more than hold onto your dog. (Mine are staying home.)

Please note that I have changed the meeting time at the carpool point from 7:15 to 7:00 am and at Chantry Flat from 8:00 to 7:45 am. Since most of the Angeles National Forest is closed for at least a year, I expect that parking at Chantry Flat will fill up earlier than usual. If the parking lots are full, please drive back down the road until you can find a (safe) open space on the side of the road and then walk back up to the trailhead where the road enters the lower parking lot.

Please give those on the waitlist the courtesy of changing your RSVP from "Yes" to "No" as soon as possible if you will not be able to participate.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

OCT. 1 UPDATE: I received unofficial news today that Chantry Flat will reopen on Saturday, Oct. 10. I don't want to wait until one day before the scheduled hike to find out whether or not we can go. Therefore, I am rescheduling this hike for the following Sunday, Oct. 18. There is no guarantee that we will be "good to go" on the 18th, but the odds are better than for the 11th.

If you cannot attend on the 18th, please switch your RSVP to "no", making room for those on the waitlist.

There is going to be a $5 fee for each person on this hike, collected at Chantry Flat before we depart, that will give us access to Sturtevant Camp, including the restrooms (with indoor plumbing!), for several hours. I plan to hike an extra five miles round-trip, with considerable elevation gain, from the Camp up to Newcomb Pass to view the fire damage to the San Gabriel Wilderness. I hiked through the pass about two weeks before the Station Fire and (perhaps morbidly) I would like to see the aftermath of the fire before the area begins to recover. I assume that most of you will prefer to take it easy at the camp (there are fun things to do) for the three hours required for a few of us to make the side trip to the pass and back to the Camp.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT NOTE: Tentative date contingent on Santa Anita Canyon and Chantry Flat reopening by October 11. This area, my favorite part of the front range of the Angeles Crest, was spared during the Station Fire, but the Adams Pack Station at Chantry Flat and Sturtevant's Camp were evacuated when Mt. Wilson and Santa Anita Canyon were threatened by the fire. As of today, Chantry Flat and the Canyon are still closed. If they remain closed a few days before Oct. 11, I will reschedule.

Chantry Flat to Sturtevant's Camp via Spruce Grove and return via Mt. Zion and Hoegee's Camp on the Upper Winter Creek Trail.

9.5 miles with an elevation gain of about 1,500 feet. NOT FOR BEGINNERS! But the pace is leisurely for seasoned hikers and we stop to smell the roses (figuratively speaking) along the way.

This is one of my favorite hikes in the San Gabriel Mountains with plenty of shade and a wide range of scenery: streams, canyons, forests, mountains. Bring lunch and water.

Sturtevant's Camp is a gem that can only be reached on foot. It sits in a grove of large spruce trees, has been in continuous operation since the 1890s (no, that's not a typo), and boasts the only croquet field I have found (to date) in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Start time 7:45 am at Chantry Flat.
Meet in the main section of the parking lot. Drive through the first parking lot and into the main lot above it. Look for a white Volvo sedan. Plan to arrive a few minutes early. The drive from the Santa Anita exit of I-210 to the parking lot at Chantry Flat takes about 20 minutes. Consider carpooling (see below). We will return to Chantry Flat late in the afternoon. Treat this as a full-day excursion. If you arrive a few minutes late, look for the group at the trailhead at the entrance to the parking lot.

PLEASE NOTE: A National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parking.
You can purchase an Adventure Pass on-site when you arrive at Chantry Flat OR at most Sporting Goods Stores (i.e. Big 5). A single day parking pass costs $5; an annual pass $30.

Take I-210 to Arcadia (a few miles east of Pasadena) and exit at Santa Anita Avenue. Turn north (toward the mountains) at the bottom of the ramp and drive through residential Arcadia. Santa Anita Avenue turns into a narrow road running along the side of Santa Anita Canyon. The road terminates at Chantry Flat, where there are parking and restroom facilities.

To carpool:
Those coming from the LA Basin and the San Fernando Valley are welcome to meet us at the parking lot for the tennis courts and soccer field near the southeast corner of Griffith Park -– on Riverside Drive 100 yards south of the intersection of Riverside and Los Feliz Blvd. To get there, exit from the I-5 at Los Feliz, proceed west to the first stop light, turn left (south) onto Riverside, and then left at the first driveway into the parking lot. Do NOT turn north from Los Feliz into Griffith Park. (If you cannot see the tennis courts and the soccer field immediately after you turn onto Riverside, you are going the wrong way.) The carpool point meeting time is 7:00 AM. Don't be late. We will leave without you since it takes about 40 minutes to drive to Chantry Flat.

My mobile number is 323-354-0168. Mobile phones don't work in Santa Anita Canyon. If you don't call me before 7:30 am, you won't reach me.

Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it. There is no "Maybe" option. If you want to bring more than one person with you, please contact me.

Joining this hike is entirely voluntary and participants assume all associated risks. It is each hiker's responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate, with appropriate provisions and equipment. DESCRIPTION:
This will be up to two hikes put together with food and drinks afterward at a funky little place in Wrightwood called “The Raccoon Saloon.” We’ll begin our day with a Slow-Poke hike up to the summit of Mount Baden-Powell (9’400 FT.) from the Vincent gap parking lot (6,600 FT.). This is a short trail (only 4 miles each way) but steep and very worthwhile. Mount Baden-Powell has been called “North Baldy” and was named after the man who started the Boy Scout organization. This is a beautiful hike that ends at a very nice summit surrounded by trees that are over 1,500 years old. (They are just slightly older than your leader LOL). This should be considered a moderate level hike.

After descending back down to the parking lot at Vincent Gap, we’ll consider another short hike to the Big Horn Mine. This mine still has an old stamping mill at its entrance and is very interesting and photogenic. This is an easy hike and is only 3-4 miles RT.

After returning to the cars, those who wish can head on over to Wrightwood and to the Raccoon Saloon for some food and drink. I’ll have directions to hand out.

NOTE . I LIST THIS AS TENATIVE AS THERE IS CURRENTLY A FIRE IN THE AREA. IF WE DO NOT HAVE ACCESS BY THE HIKE DATE, I WILL USE THE 3 "T"S AS AN ALTERNATIVE AND MOVE EVERYONE OVER.

NOTE 2. AS THIS IS QUITE A DISTANCE, I ENCOURAGE CARPOOLING.

DIRECTIONS:
From the Valley: Get on the 14 north and take it to Pearblossom hwy. 138. Go east on Pearblossom to the 2. Make a right and follow it through Wrightwood. Veer left at the fork at Big Pines and continue to follow the 2 to the end and the Vincent Gap parking lot. (rest-rooms available here). You will need a Forest service pass to park here.

From LA and the SouthBay: Get on the 10 east and take it to the 15. Go north on the 15. Take the 15 to Hwy. 138 and go west toward Wrightwood. At the junction with the 2, take the 2 towards Wrightwood. Follow it through Wrightwood and then veer left at the fork at Big Pines and continue to follow the 2 to the end and the Vincent Gap parking lot. (rest-rooms available here). You will need a Forest service pass to park here.

Another last minute hike. We'll be taking the Old Mt Wilson Trail all the way to the top of Mt Wilson, which lies at the boundary of the ANF closure. I'd like to hike up and get some sobering views of the burned area.

The pace will be decently brisk; I'd like to summit in 2.5 - 3 hrs. Of course anyone is welcome to join at their own pace. The trail is well marked at will likely have lots of people on the trail.

Stats:

Distance: 14-15 miles
Elevation Gain: 4500 ft
Pace: 2.5 - 3 mph
Difficulty: 8/10 Strenuous

For all trips, wear boots or sturdy shoes, and bring lunch, lots of drinks, warm clothing (depending on altitude)

The trip "leader" is a volunteer and not a real leader (i.e. not liable for the group). Think of it as hiking with a group of friends.

Joining this hike is entirely voluntary and participants assume the full risks associated with the activities. It is each hiker's responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate in a strenuous hike, with the appropriate water, food, clothing, first aid, and navigation equipment for the conditions. Since the Angeles National Forest is closed till further notice as a result of the Station Fire, and I am not inclined to travel farther afield this weekend, I am going to reprise my default Sunday morning hike in Griffith Park from the Fern Dell to Mt. Hollywood and back to the Fern Dell via the Observatory. Five miles roundtrip.

Easy to moderate, but novice hikers are likely to have difficulty with the elevation gain as the trail to Mt. Hollywood is a steady uphill climb.

Up Western Canyon to the hilltop behind the Observatory (not to be confused with the Hollywood sign a mile to the west above Beachwood Canyon). Then down along different trails and fireroads with a stop at the Observatory. Elevation gain of 1,000 feet. Approximately two and a half hours, including stops to enjoy the 360-degree panoramic views of the Greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area from atop Mt. Hollywood and at the recently renovated Observatory. Those who wish to linger can visit the Observatory exhibits before descending the last mile on their own along the fire road to the Fern Dell parking lot.

Enter Griffith Park from Los Feliz Blvd., 100 yards east of Western Avenue, between a bust of Leif Ericsson (leader of the Vikings who reached Newfoundland 1,000 years ago) and a statue of a "rampant" (i.e., standing on his hindlegs) bear. Don't confuse this entrance with the Vermont/Hillhurst entrance, also on Los Feliz Blvd., a mile to the east. Drive uphill about 0.6 mile into the park, past Trails Restaurant on the left and children's playground equipment on the right, to the entrance of a large parking lot on your left. Look for a white Volvo sedan parked on the far side of the parking lot and one or two small black dogs (thought by some to resemble miniature black bears). Parking is free.

The group will depart at 8 a.m. You should plan to reach the parking lot a few minutes early, but if you miss us there are multiple trails and fireroads leading up to Mt. Hollywood and to the Observatory. You will enjoy your walk in the park with or without the group.

Trails Restaurant, 0.2 mile from the parking lot, serves breakfast for those want to eat under the trees after the hike.
