This hike is 4 miles/800 ft is known to the regulars as the "backyard hike". Most of the elevation gain is in a short period of time. The trail on the steep ascent is hard to find because of the fires, so a little bit of adventure is required for this hike. This hike is @ 100 minutes

Legend for hikes: These hikes run year 'round every Tuesday. In the leader's (subjective) mind, the hikes are generally easiest the first Tuesday of the month and most challenging the last Tuesday of the month, with everything progressive in between. Beginners are encouraged to come to the first Tuesday of the month. Beginners will receive doses of encouragement the second Tuesday of the month to keep up if unable. The 3-4-5 Tuesday's of the month it is expected anyone that can't keep up with the leader will turn back

The fine print:
Wildlife (snakes, bobcats, mountain lions etc) seen in the park, be aware of your surroundings and stay alert at all times. Polite dogs on leashes are allowed. If you plan on bringing a dog, please email the organizer beforehand.

Bring Along
Hiking boots and at least 1 Liter Water. Layered clothing in case it's cold. Long pants in case it's hot, to prevent being bitten by insects. Mosquito and tic spray (available at Sports Chalet) are recommended.
No bright (white) flashlights. Red, Blue flashlights are ok.
If you get to the lot after we meet, Sierra Club hikes start at 7:00PM on the opposite end of the lot.
We do start ON TIME, no matter how much traffic is on the freeways, inside the park, including if our parking lots are being used by movie crews. Allow yourself enough time for any unexpected surprises.

Directions:

134 Westbound (From Eagle Rock/Pasadena Area): Stay in the far right lane as if you are getting on Interstate 5. The Zoo Drive exit is almost hidden at the I5/134 Interchange. Exit Zoo Drive and proceed on the road, underneath the freeway, and make a left at the first stop sign (Western Heritage Way). At the fourth stop sign, make a right hand turn. There's no street sign, but there should be a sign in the median stating the Merry Go Round is to the right. Make a right hand turn. Continue up the road. The road forces you to make a sharp right hand turn into a parking lot. Go through the parking lot. You'll hit a small dark road (it's lit if it's daylight savings time) for a short period of time, followed by a brightly lit lot. Park in the back of the lot (the part you entered in). Meet at the back of the lot at the back side of the "yield" sign, near the driveway entrance to the lower parking lot. You won't be able to see the actual yield sign, but you'll see the pole.

134 Eastbound (From Burbank area): Exit Victory and make a right hand turn. Make a left hand turn into Griffith Park. Go five stop signs.

From Interstate 5 (either direction)
Go West on Los Feliz. Make a right on Crystal Springs and drive into Griffith Park. Go two stop signs and make a left turn.

Where to meet: See above. If you know the park well, it is Merry Go Round Lot #2, just at the path to the lower lot.

George's program covers a cruise on the Yangtse River, visits to some of China's largest cities, and a trip to Tibet.
His program follows Sierra Club news, including environmental concerns such as the proposed development of The Village in Playa Vista.
The Community Room is located in Burton Chace Park, which is reached by driving west on Mindanao Way to its end. There is a parking lot (free) at the end of the road, and, if necessary, an overflow lot nearby.

What to bring: water, hiking shoes, snack, sunblock, hat---
NO SANDLES, a hiking stick if you slip easy on rocks

Hike level: advanced beginner, 4.5 miles roundtrip, 400 feet elevation gain/loss
2 1/2 hours hike time. It is only "advanced" because a couple places on the trail are
A little steep

hike description: Well this is my favorite place to go to relax, the korean bell.
The korean bell is a bell that was gifted to our fine city.
It was placed on a military base where you can still see the gun foundations of the
big guns. Well the base is long closed up, but the place and view is nice

This hike is for fun, we are not going to climb a big mountain. If you are looking for big
workout, this is not the place. But we will walk for a couple of hours

We will first start off at a little park indicated at the address.
We will walk down to the beach and walk on the beach trail for a couple of miles.
The beach trail is sand and a whole lot of rocks. A couple of places on the trail
is moderately steep going up and down. But you will need hiking
shoes or shoes with a good grip.(no sandles). If you can't do it, you can always butt slide
down to the beach. Last time we did it , everybody had a good time
Then we will climb back onto the street and pass a nice lighthouse.
Then we will go up the hill to visit the korean bell. there we will rest and eat our snacks
and enjoy the view. we will return on the streets the easy way
dogs ok but leash at all times.
kids ok but you are responsible for them

Five miles roundtrip. Easy to moderate, but novice hikers are likely to have difficulty with the elevation gain as the trail to Mt. Hollywood is a steady uphill climb.

Up Western Canyon to the hilltop behind the Observatory (not to be confused with the Hollywood sign a mile to the west above Beachwood Canyon). Then down along different trails and fireroads with a stop at the Observatory. Elevation gain of 1,000 feet. Approximately two and a half hours, including stops to enjoy the 360-degree panoramic views of the Greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area from atop Mt. Hollywood and at the recently renovated Observatory. Those who wish to linger can visit the Observatory exhibits before descending the last mile on their own along the fire road to the Fern Dell parking lot.

Enter Griffith Park from Los Feliz Blvd., 100 yards east of Western Avenue, between a bust of Leif Ericsson (leader of the Vikings who reached Newfoundland 1,000 years ago) and a statue of a "rampant" (i.e., standing on his hindlegs) bear. Don't confuse this entrance with the Vermont/Hillhurst entrance, also on Los Feliz Blvd., a mile to the east. Drive uphill about 0.6 mile into the park, past Trails Restaurant on the left and children's playground equipment on the right, to the entrance of a large parking lot on your left. Look for a white Volvo sedan parked on the far side of the parking lot and one or two small black dogs (thought by some to resemble miniature black bears). Parking is free.

The group will depart at 8 a.m. You should plan to reach the parking lot a few minutes early, but if you miss us there are multiple trails and fireroads leading up to Mt. Hollywood and to the Observatory. You will enjoy your walk in the park with or without the group.

Trails Restaurant, 0.2 mile from the parking lot, serves breakfast for those want to eat under the trees after the hike.

My mobile number is 323-354-0168.

Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it. There is no "Maybe" option.

Mt. Yale is on the table once again. We'll start from the Mt. Wilson trail in Sierra Madre and then take the Jones Peak connecting trail up. Then we'll hop on the newly carved fire break all the way to the Toll Road. Here we'll break left until we get to the start of the Ridge up to Yale.

Total distance is 14 miles with ~4000' gain.

Here's the info from the last time we were on Yale. In my opinion, this peak has the best view of LA of all the Front Range peaks.

For those who haven't hiked with me before, go on the waitlist and email me to be considered.

RAIN DOES NOT CANCEL.

For all trips, wear boots or sturdy shoes, and bring lunch, lots of drinks, warm clothing (depending on altitude)

The trip "leader" is a volunteer and not a real leader (i.e. not liable for the group). Think of it as hiking with a group of friends.

Joining this hike is entirely voluntary and participants assume the full risks associated with the activities. It is each hiker's responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate in a strenuous hike, with the appropriate water, food, clothing, first aid, and navigation equipment for the conditions. Slow poke hikers only! This is my 5th trip to Mount Baldy and I've always done it in a slow poke pace. There is no rush! With more frequent breaks we will be rewarded with a great view, sense of accomplishment and a good workout. Starting from Manker Flats parking lot we will go through the big gate and take a moment to enjoy San Antonio water falls then we will begin our challenging journey to summit Mount Baldy.

Because I'm new to leading and organizing hikes come and join my hike to Manzanita Ridge-Old Mt. Wilson trail scheduled for November 7 at 8am to get a feel of my pace. I'm truly a slow poke hiker and I am able to summit all the strenuous hikes I've been so far.

DIRECTIONS TO THE TRAILHEAD:
Take the 10 or the 210 to Upland and exit Mountain Avenue heading North into the Angeles National Forest. Follow Mountain Avenue to the intersection with Shinn Road - veer left. Continue to Mt. Baldy Road, veer right onto Mt. Baldy Road and follow it for several miles to Manker Flats. Be careful of your speed after Baldy Village - some of the turns are hairpin. Make a U-turn at the sign for SAN ANTONIO FALLS ROAD (The trailhead and some outhouses are located here) and start looking for a parking place. You will need an adventure pass to park here. We will meet at the trailhead by the outhouses.

This is going to be a good workout and we will take it SLOW as usual because that's my pace. There's no shade for the first part of the trail until we reach the First Water. We can stop here to enjoy the creek then head up to Orchard Camp and enjoy the shade for a bit then head to the right of the trail to Manzanita Ridge. We will take our lunch break at the famous bench, take a little nap or just simply enjoy what this place has to offer. NO RUSH!

Bring plenty of water, snack, lunch, hat, sunscreen and wear sturdy shoes/boots for the hike and a good fun attitude.

From the 210 Freeway, exit Baldwin Ave. and go north. When you come to a traffic light where you have to go either right or left, go left to the next light and that is Baldwin Ave. Take a right and continue up Baldwin Ave. through the downtown area of Sierra Madre. Approximately ¾’s of a mile from the downtown plaza, take a right on Mira Monte. Go down about 1/3 mile and you will come to a small park on your left. Park anywhere in this area along Mira Monte.
