You'll get invited to our Meetups as soon as they're scheduled!
I couldn't find anything else with the same steepness, so I'm going back to basics. Anyways, we'll head up to Echo mtn from this start rather than the Lake Ave route. After resting at Echo for a nice little break, we'll head up to Inspiration Point via Castle Canyon. We'll have lunch on the shaded benches at Inspiration Point.
The route back will be down the backside not through Castle Canyon. This route is a little longer and more in the sun, but it's different. This trail takes us back to Echo Mountain. Finally, we'll take the Sam Merril Trail back to the Lake ave trailhead and then complete the loop back to the cars.
Here's the starting location, parking is on the street, and there is plenty of it:

Distance: ~9 miles
Elevation gain: ~3000 - 3500 feet?
Difficulty:
- From Rubio to Echo: 7.5/10 - this portion will require some scrambling, but nothing too intense.
- Echo to Inspiration Pt.: 8/10 (this portion always tires me out; maybe this time will be different?)
- Downhill from Inspiration Point, but will be in the sun: 6/10
My pace is moderate, but not slow. If you're a slower paced hiker, I recommend that you bring a friend. As always though, go at your own pace.
Be sure to bring water, ~4-5 liters worth, food + snacks, sun screen, bug spray, and the essentials.
For all trips, wear boots or sturdy shoes, and bring lunch, lots of drinks, warm clothing (depending on altitude)
Trips are canceled in the event of rain (unless trip leader states differently). So assume it is canceled if it's raining the morning of.
The trip "leader" is a volunteer and not a real leader (i.e. not liable for the group). Think of it as hiking with a group of friends.
Joining LA Hiking hikes is entirely voluntary and participants assume the full risks associated with the activities. It is each hiker's responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate in a strenuous hike, with the appropriate water, food, clothing, first aid, and navigation equipment for the conditions. The LA Hiking Group and the individual organizers make no warranties about the safety or supervision of these activities.
