Distance: ~ 16 miles total
Elevation Gain: ~ 5000 ft
Gain / Mile: ~ 625 ft / mile
Trail Type: Standard Trail
Difficulty: 9 / 10
Estimated Time: 8 hrs

Hike Description
There are shorter ways to ascend Mt Baden Powell, but this way we will also summit Mt Burnham, Throop Peak and Mt Hawkins. Our trail will cover a part of the Pacific Crest Trail. This is a hike I have not done before but it is a well used trail.

Difficulty

Looking at the elevation profile, there are probably 2 miles that have about 1000 ft gain / mile, which will be a tough workout, while the other parts will be moderate. To stay with the 1st group, you should be in great shape. There might be several groups depending on how many people sign up, but that is less certain.

If it's your first time hiking with me

If I list a hike as an 8 or above, then you must message me before. These hikes are generally pretty tough and although you are more than welcome to try the hike out at your own pace, you should know that the 'lead' group will be keep a brisk pace that usually people in very good shape can handle

For all trips, wear boots or sturdy shoes, and bring lunch, lots of drinks, warm clothing (depending on altitude)

Trips are canceled in the event of rain (unless trip leader states differently). So assume it is canceled if it's raining the morning of.

The trip "leader" is a volunteer and not a real leader (i.e. not liable for the group). Think of it as hiking with a group of friends.

Joining LA Hiking hikes is entirely voluntary and participants assume the full risks associated with the activities. It is each hiker's responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate in a strenuous hike, with the appropriate water, food, clothing, first aid, and navigation equipment for the conditions. The LA Hiking Group and the individual organizers make no warranties about the safety or supervision of these activities.

I would love to go on this hike but I am on my summer vacation then. Anyhow, be aware that the Crest Highway is closed between Islip Saddle and Vincent Gap. You have to return from Baden-Powell the way you came or you have to arrange a very long car shuttle. Anyhow, have fun. I hope I can join your outings when I come back in August.

    •  Great hike. Didn't make it to Baden-Powell, got as far as Throop which was still pretty cool. Great choice Ze! The mileage on this trail really flew by fast. Very scenic.
    •  Beautiful trail. View in every direction. The back country of the San Gabriels is it's best part.
    •  Great Hike ! Thanks.

Gorgeous views of the mountain ranges and forest ---- great being outdoors. Very well kept trail. This was my 2nd hiking experience, and the longest ever, so a beginner, but was able to complete.
