This will be the "2-Fer" hike we've done in the past that was so popular. I'd like to do it again before it gets too hot and too deep into the summer - and while the water is still flowing at the Grotto.

For those unfamiliar with this hike, it is actually two hikes in one day. Neither of the hikes are terribly difficult and we will take breaks as needed and not leave anyone behind. The RT distance for the Sandstone portion is 6 miles with an 1100 ft. elevation gain/loss. The Grotto hike is 3 miles RT with a negligable gain/loss.

THE CAKE
The first is Sandstone Peak by way of the Mishe Mokwa trail. This is a nice trail that takes us through a canyon and past some interesting rock formations before winding its way up to Sandstone Peak - the highest point in the Santa Monica mountains. The view from up here is incredible and we should be able to see 5 or more of the Channel Islands. Bring a camera!!

THE FROSTING
After coming down from Sandstone, we will climb back into our cars and head down the road to the Circle X ranch parking lot. From here we pick up the short trail that takes us to the Grotto - a subterranean waterfall that I'm sure will be a very welcome site after a day of hiking in the heat.

DIRECTIONS
Wherever you're coming from, get onto PCH and head north from the 10 Frwy. 28 miles from the intersection of the 10 and PCH is Yerba Buena Road. Turn right on Yerba Buena and go up the mountain app. 6 miles. NOTE*You will pass the entrance to the Circle X ranch ( the site of our second hike) at about mile 5.

The parking lot for Sandstone Peak is on the left side of the road. We will meet here. There is no charge for parking and you do not need an adventure pass. Occasionally cars are broken into here so don't leave out any valuables. It always seems to take longer than I anticipate to get to this hike, so leave early! I will be coming up from the South Bay and will carpool with anyone that wants to chip in for gas.

Is this hiking groop still full? Where is the meetup spot? I'd love to come with a friend.

Who attended?

    •  For those that went - we had our challenges today...starting w/ the 100+ heat! But we all made it back safely, and had a very memorable day. I'd like to do this hike again in cooler weather!
    •  Due to the extreme heat, we had a bit of a minor emergency. Others Stepped up to the plate however and the group continued on; albeit, on a more "scenic" route as evidenced by Wai Lin's text messages - which I was unable to receive: 11:37 "Where r u? We r at the at peak" 11:47 "We are going back down. See ya at the car" 12:26 "Where r u? Do we take the Backbone trail down???" 2:09 "We r at the other parking lot. Please come get us!" 2:11 "Please call me!!!" 6:25 "Sorry for texting you so much. Thanks for taking us on the hike. I think everyone had a good time despite the heat."

Turned into a tough hike when we added 4 extra miles to the original 6... but a great workout and we met some really nice people! Brice and I are glad we did it. Sorry that you worried so much Chris, you're a great leader!
