NOW ABOUT THE TRIP! We'll be spending the weekend at the Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center in Chesterton, IN. Let me be honest when I say that this is not, in my opinion, camping. But since I can't think of another word to describe the trip we'll call this cabin "camping." We will be staying in heated 8 bunk cabins. Each cabin has it's own bathroom with flush toilet and shower. So put your regular camping gear aside - all you need for the weekend are clothes and your regular hiking gear! I will divide everyone up into the cabins, if you have special requests let me know. I'll do my best! (A private cabin is not an option)

The trip includes 2 breakfasts catered by the Learning Center and a pizza dinner on Saturday night. Saturday night will definitely not be our normal camping night! We'll have a night hike and we'll try and do a movie night inside Cowles Lodge. And there is also the classic night around the campfire - they have quite a firepit there!

Our day itinerary isn't set yet but options abound, particularly hiking and we'll most likely hike the Little Calumet River Trail, Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm Trail and quite possibly Cowles Bog. Our weekend will include at least one interpretative program conducted by the Learning Center (it's a requirement!). With luck perhaps we can work out a guided tour of Pinhook Bog. Have a bike? Bring it along and bike the Calumet Trail! ? or take the afternoon off and visit Mt Baldy (no relation to my bald head!)

Carl Sandburg said "The Dunes are to the Midwest what the Grand Canyon is to Arizona and the Yosemite is to California. They constitute a signature of time and eternity." If you are new to the area and you haven't seen the Dunes then now is your chance! Don't miss it. If you've been to the dunes and have been dying to get back then this is a great chance to become reacquainted. After all, we'll have the beaches to ourselves but I don't think we'll do much swimming.

Your trip fee includes cabin rental, 2 breakfasts, pizza dinner, IDELC fees and a small donation to WCH.

Absolutely fantastic! I had a wonderful time meeting everyone and had a great time on all of the hikes and at all of the other activities. I liked that each of the hikes offered a different perspective of the local area and found that the night hike was most enlightening and educational. Mike did an outstanding job of organizing the weekend and leading the hikes. I hope everyone will post their photos for those of us who forgot our cameras. I look forward to more events with WCH!
    •  The sleeping accomodations were very convenient and made the trip very easy to do. Mike's management is just right. It was also a great group of people.
    •  What a relaxing weekend, starting with not having to get up to cook! Always good to see the old faces and meet the new ones. And do you think can we set the clocks back an hour EVERY Sunday on these trips?
    •  Could it possibly have been a more beautiful, perfect weekend with nicer people? I think not!
    •  Great to meet all the new people as well seeing everyone else again. It's funny that although we are all just meeting, people feel so comfortable and get to know each other right away.(What does Mike put in the water?) Comfortable and clean cabins. A spacious hall for everyone to gather. Flexible schedule.Lunch together at a restaurant was a fun detour in our plans. The dunes were beautiful.Saw a cactus with prickly pears in the sand by the beach.Learned they go dormant in the winter and grow great in the Chicago dunes because of the great drainage in the sand.Smelled a tree. The night hike was a surprising experience that heightened our awareness of our surroundings. The campfire was a nice thing to bring us all together again after lots of activity. Learned that pine bark makes an awesome fire starter. Going to remember that the first time I get lost in the woods. I was "happy as a pig". (Jack, please post that picture so people understand the context.) Thanks so much Michael.
    •  I had a great time this weekend. To me it was nice and relaxing yet somehow we were still able to get in some great hikes! I think my favorite was the Sunday morning hike - that ravine area with all the fall colors was incredible. Thanks for coming out and making this such a great trip! It wouldn't have been the same without all of you!!
    •  I was pleased to experience the combination of wonderful weather , nice and friendly people and amazing Indiana Dunes Spring at Spring . Absolutely fantastic weekend !
    •  Very good organization and planning. Great event.
    •  Had a wonderful time. As usual the weekend was well organized. Thanks, Michael & Jack.
