Collect Seeds at Arlington National Cemetery

Posted by: Lydia Lydia on Oct 6, 2009

Want to volunteer some time for the environment this weekend? Gather your friends and come to Arlington National Cemetery this Saturday, October 10, for the annual Growing Native seed collection from 10 am- 2 pm. Spend the day collecting, indentifying and bagging native hardwood seeds. Each fall, thousands of volunteers throughout the Potomac River watershed collect seeds which are donated to state nurseries, and used to restore streamside forests along the Potomac and its tributaries. Growing Native is a project, managed by Potomac Conservancy, which emphasizes the connection between clean water and healthy forested land. Pre-register by calling Deanna Tricarico, Director of Outreach, at (301) 608-1188 x204, or show up and register at the event when you get there.

Billy goat trail hike with lecture on its geological formation and history.

Posted by: Jim C Jim C on Nov 20, 2009

Here is an idea for a future meetup: A fascinating lecture/presentation on our regions geological formation and history.

I have heard Callan Bentley speak on local and regional geology and he is impressive, knowledgeable and funny. His talks are of the same high caliber as the best presenters I have attended at Cafe Scientifique.
I highly recommend him as a speaker for an nature/environmental event or even better as guest lecturer on a trail hike on the Billy Goat Trail, Great Falls, or other interesting rocky and curious terrain landscapes of DC.

    Callan's contact info:

    RESCHEDULED- POTOMAC RIVER JAM

Posted by: Bridget Bridget on Oct 19, 2009

New Date: Sunday, October 25, 8 am - 4 pm
River Center at Lockhouse 8, C&O Canal National Historical Park, 7906 Riverside Ave, Cabin John, MD 20818

We?ve decided this coming Sunday, October 25, will be a lot sunnier (and drier) for Potomac Conservancy?s second annual Potomac River Jam - A day-long celebration of the river and canal.

Various local musicians will perform acoustic sets throughout the afternoon. Enjoy events such as a morning bird walk, nature photography session, and a tree identification and medicinal plant walk. Canoe trips over to Minnie?s Island will be offered. Bring the kids for face-painting and other activities. All events are free.

For additional information about the River Center at Lockhouse 8, contact Potomac Conservancy?s River Center Coordinator, Bridget Chapin, at chapin@potomac.org or (301) 608-1188 x206, or http://www.potomac.org/site/discover-rclh8/.
