Thursday morning 8am update: Weather is not looking too good for our Christmas Day hike, but I just hate to cancel w/o your input. Please look @ the forecast & let me know what you're thinking via email or posting. If we go, we need some brave souls who have experience driving in this weather.

Questions: Jayne 703-973-7492 grandisland2@hotmail.com

Arrive early as we leave Centreville Park & Ride promptly @ 11:00am

Hunting season is upon us. Be responsible. Be Safe. Wear blaze Orange -- hat, vest whatever will stand out. Hunting is against the law in Shenandoah. Shenandoah closes Skyline from 5pm to 8pm during hunting seasons to curb poachers. Poachers don't seem to care about laws. Be responsible. Be safe.

Hikers have asked me to reinstate donating $5 to charity on our behalf. Please take this $5 additional cost into account when deciding about joining us on this hike.

The Overall Run circuit passes one of the largest continuous waterfalls in Virginia. With any luck it will be frozen and an incredibly beautiful sight to behold. The trails also go through valley streams and meadows. No wonder this loop is another local hiker favorite. With Beecher Ridge having one of the highest concentrations of Black Bears in the park, this is one hike where you may still catch a glimpse of a bear in the wild. http://www.hikingupward.com/SNP/OverallRun/

8.5 miles, 1,965 ft elevation gain, 5 hours or less, 4 out of 5 in difficulty

Sorry, this Meetup is FULL but a Waiting List is available.

Note: I will be leaving from Centreville P&R friday night and camp out at the trailhead.

*** EXTREME HARDCORE OVER 26 miles AND OVER 6000 ft of ELEVATION GAIN***

Note: THIS EVENT IS NOT FULL BUT EVERYONE NEEDS TO SIGN IN
AS WAITLISTED AND ANSWER THE QUESTION THAT POPS UP BEFORE I MOVE THEM TO YES.

This is the 5th 4 peaks event in a series. Details from the first 4:

1st 4 peaks
2nd 4 peaks
3rd 4 peaks
4th 4 peaks

If you have done the first 4 you will know what to expect.

These are **EXTREMELY STRENOUS HIKES** so you may sign up for the
wait list and answer the questions about the hardest hike you have done and I will then move you into the yes list.

Although this is **EXTREMELY HARD** there is some support.
There will be coolers with Gatorade, water, other drinks and food at a few places. The
suggested donation is $10.

The 4 peaks are:
Peak 1: Unnamed peak: 1550 ft ?? about 750 ft elevation gain
Peak 2: High Knob: 2388 ft: about 1300 ft elevation gain
Peak 3: Carson Mtn/Fort Windham Rocks 2550 ft ?? about 2500 ft elevation gain
Peak 4: Compton Peak: 2909 ft: about 400 ft elevation gain

Gain after Peak 4: about 1500
total approximate gain: 6450 ft.

Note: Peak 1 is unnamed and not clearly marked on the maps, so we will use GPS to scout and find the
highest point in the general vicinity and name it. My vote is to name it for Tom Witte who likes finding the
high points :)

Note: Peak 2 is not on the trail. It is marked on the map and the GPS coordinates are: 38° 53' N; 78° 7' W
38.886789, -78.111904. There is going to be some scrambling.

We are going to use PATC maps 8 & 9 for this.

We will meet at Centreville park and ride at 5:30 am to the start of the trail, drop off the passengers and
the drivers will drive to the end of the trail and shuttle back.

Directions to start of trail: Take I-66 W to exit 18, take 55 West
Go about 3 miles, parking will be on the left. Take right turn for additional parking.
if you hit 638 or enter Linden you have gone too far.

Directions to end of trail: Continue on 55 for about 8 miles and turn left on 522
go about 3 miles and turn right on 604 (sign for Va 4-H)
go about 2 miles and stay right to be on 604
go about 1 mi and turn left to be on 601
parking on right in a quarter mile.

The route is as follows:

Virginia Journeys 2011 38th Biennial Conference of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy

July 1 – 8, 2011

The event will celebrate the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and the Blue Ridge Mountain Trails of Virginia.

Rogers National Recreation Area with Virginia’s highest peak at 5,729 feet. The Trail affords a splendid wilderness trip as it passes Whitetop Mountain, Rhododendron Gap and Grayson Highlands State Park. Also located nearby is the Virginia Creeper Trail, along a native-American footpath and old mountain railroad bed.
