7TH ANNUAL GOLD POINT GHOST TOWN MEMORIAL DAZE 2008 (CENTENNIAL YEAR!!!!!)

Please see www.goldpointghosttown.com for photos of last year's events. Go down the page to the "special events" section and you will see that many of the photos are of our group!

This trip is a blast! I can guarantee it'll be one of your all time favorites! The weekend consists of tent camping Friday - Monday. Memorial Day flag ceremony, music daily from morning till night, delicious food for breakfast, lunch & dinner each day with proceeds going to the volunteer fire department and the building refurbishing fund, chili cook-off, Dutch oven stew cook- off, etc. Too much fun to mention!

Gold Point is about a 3 hour drive from Las Vegas. Some of us will be leaving Vegas Friday after work. There will be others leaving Saturday morning. Even if you can't come up until Saturday night or Sunday morning, it's still worth the drive! I will give good driving directions later in this post so feel free to come up whenever you like. The event ends after breakfast on Monday.

Sheriff Stone (he's not really a Sheriff but when you own most of the town you can call yourself whatever you want) will be cooking for us. He is an excellent cook. Friday dinner is available from 5-7pm ($5 for burgers & fries). Saturday breakfast from 8-10am ($6 for eggs, pancakes, potatoes with onions and peppers, bacon, sausage, orange juice and coffee). at 1pm ($5.00 for Dutch oven stew contest). Dinner Saturday 5-7pm ($12 for steak, fries, green beans, corn, and 1 drink token to be used for soda, beer, or mixed drink). Breakfast again Sunday 8am-10am ($6). Lunch Saturday at 1pm ($5) will be the chili cook-off. Dinner again on Sunday from 5-7pm ($12), and breakfast again on Monday ($6). The food is delicious. Take my word for it. When else can you go camping and not have to bring a bunch of food? There will also be vegetarian entrees available for those of you who have special food needs. (Please specify such in your RSVP to me so he can be sure and have enough.) **You may also bring your own food and cook for yourself at our campsite if you wish**

Drinks are available for purchase at the saloon OR YOU MAY BRING YOUR OWN DRINKS INTO THE SALOON. $2.50 per beer, $3.00 for drinks with one shot, water bottles $1.00, soda $1.00. Last year there was
also a Schwans ice cream truck there with ice cream for sale. Raffle tickets are also for sale for $2 or less depending how many you buy.

There is no plumbing in Gold Point (population 9) but there are water tanks which supply running water to the saloon. There are outhouses. Bring your water for drinking, coffee at camp, etc. Sheriff Stone has ordered 2 port-a-potties and a washbasin to be placed at our camp site. A pink one for girls and a blue one for boys. I will collect $10.00 per ADULT (free for kids) to cover the campng / Port-a-Potty fees. Any extra $ will go to building restoration fund. We will have a campfire ring at our site so BRING SOME FIREWOOD and your chairs for bonding around the campfire when you're not hanging in the saloon listening to the bands. By the way, same bands as last year. They were all great!

DIRECTIONS: (see map on www.goldpointghosttown.com in the directions section. Forget the part about Left at the Cottontail Ranch, it is no longer there.) Take 95 north to Beatty. Make a right turn at Beatty to stay on the 95. Go about 1 block and FILL YOUR TANK at the gas station there by the Candy store and Casino. This will be your last chance to get gas! Set your trip odometer and continue on this road 45-50 miles to the 266 which is about 15 miles past the Death Valley turn off. Make a left here at the 266. Continue 7 miles and make a left on 774. 8 more miles to Gold Point. No cell phone reception out there. When you get to town, go into the saloon and ask at the bar for the Hiking Group.

I'm not sure if there's an ATM in Beatty but there is NOT an ATM in Gold Point so bring cash from Vegas! (There are not stores in gold point. Bring everything you will need.)
You will need: $10.00 Camping / Port-a Potty fees payable to Kristen (any overage goes to Building Restoration Fund)
$5.00 dinner Friday
$6.00 breakfast Saturday
$5.00 lunch Saturday
$12.00 dinner Saturday

Believe me when I say IT'S WORTH EVERY PENNY! That's all I can think of to share with you at the moment I hope you join us for another fantastic time.

All I know is that at $5 per passenger, per trip, there remains an outstanding balance of $185.....Where shall I send the invoice? (I crack me up).....Seriously though, I had an absotively, posilutely floggerific time, despite the clouds, cold, sleet, hail, wind, rain and lack of sun....... I'm all packed for next year..... Don't want to be late.

Hey EVERYBODY! I'm so excited cuz I love this place! I hope you are too. Please bring some firewood. The forecast says 40-55 degrees for the weekend. It is WARM in the saloon and will be COLD outside. Weather can't ruin your fun as long as you're PREPARED! As ALWAYS: Bring lots of layers, stakes for your tent in case of wind, and a 99cent poncho in case of rain. I'm bringing my warmest sleeping bag AND a comforter for on top of that. Call me with questions @ 630-4051.

Once again an awesome weekend!! Great people, great food, great fun and an awesome teary eyed Memorial Day Ceremony!! Thanks........ can't wait until next year!!!!!!!
    •  What an incredible adventure. As Paul said, "My favorite things were the Memorial Day Flag Ceremony, the company, and the food!" I wholeheartedly agree! Yes, it rained, and yes, the weather was perfect. As Jimmy Buffett sings, "Take the weather with you," and as we learned in the movie Cassanova, (somewhat paraphrased) "When you're in love with where you are at, the weather is always perfect; even when it is raining, the weather is perfect when you love where you're at and who you're with and what you're doing." And so it was. The entertainment was perfect, the fireside talks and singalongs were perfect, the sleeping was perfect, the hikes were perfect, and even Rhyolite was perfect. Many thanks to Kristen and Paul for organizing this most excellent perfect trip.
    •  Kristen, thanks again for putting together this awesome trip! It really kicked, I mean flogged, ass!

I had a blast; I can't wait to do it again next year! Thank you Kristen for your leadership.
    •  Freaking fabulous trip!!! Especially the flag ceremony, as well as the "flogging ceremony", and other entertainment venues. Although the weather sucked at times, everyone appeared to be having a great time. Met some new people (real camping folk), and made a few new friends! Can't wait for the next trip...
    •  What a great weekend! We had an awesome time! Thank you!
    •  Despite the horrid weather we still had a blast! The food was awesome, the bands were awesome we managed to get in some great hiking on Saturday, saw a lot of mine shafts, the flag ceremony was very moving, the alchohol was good and strong, dancing, pool playing partying, wonderful people, made some new friends, hung with old friends the perfect weekend.
    •  We had fun, even though the weather was crummy and rainy. Always good to get away from town for a few days, and relax with friends.
    •  I had a great time. Lots of laughs around the fire and endless good times.
